The unit saw service in all manner of conflicts, including the Battle of Helena and Gettysburg. In 1865, General James Longstreet ordered a disbandment of the unit due to budget cuts. However, several months later, President Andrew Johnson re-activated the unit as an infantry regiment and named itthe 1st Arkansas Infantry Regiment. The regiment fought in Reconstructionist wars in Louisiana and Texas before being disbanded again in 1868.
Bella Vista is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 467 at the 2010 census. It lies on theArkansas River and is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Bella Vista community began as a farmstead east of present-day Bella Vista on the Arkansas River. This area was called "Wenatchee" by early European travelers because it was where Wenatchee Creek empties into the Arkansas River. In 1881, John Pemberton established a mill here to produce flour for his grocery store in nearby North Little Rock. By 1901, word had spread that this mill could make better flour than those available in nearby Conway. A group of men from Edward Moseley's Store in neighboring Jonesboro pooled their money to buy the mill from Pemberton in 1902. The new owners named it Bella Vista Mill after their home town of Bella Vista, Texas (then part of Mexico). They also added a sawmill and gristmill to provide additional income for the mill until 1941 when they sold both mills to Jowett Brothers Timber Products Inc.. In 1926, two years after Jowett Bros.' acquisition of Bella Vista Mill, construction began on what would become one of North America's largest cotton gin complexes—the First National Cotton Gin Company Building (now known as Harry Wetherbee Hall). The complex included five buildings: an office building (now called First National Bank), a storage building (now known asArena Lounge), three machines used for moving clays out of the gin facility (now known asthe Machine Shop Building/Mining and Manufacturing Museum), and an engine house used for powering all six machines. Work stopped during World War II but resumed soon afterward due to wartime shortages of metals and other materials needed for war production. After hostilities ended, production continued through 1946 with help from local businesses such as Donnybrook Farms Inc., which supplied workers with food and clothing while work proceeded on new buildings including another cotton gin complex—the Second National Cotton Gin Company Building—and an oil refinery built adjacent to first gin building (now known asDonnybrook Mills LLC)—all now listed on the US Register of Historic Places! Bella Vista is a small town in Arkansas, located about 20 miles northeast of Little Rock. The community was founded in 1907 by white settlers and named for Bella Villa, a property on the edge of the town that was donated to the town by Mrs. John A. Bell. The population of Bella Vista was 587 at the 2000 census. A post office called Bella Vista was established in 1907, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1951. Bella Vista was first settled in 1814 by Englishmen, who named it after the Bella Mountains. The town was first built on the site of a small fort called Fort Smith. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army passed through Bella Vista while marching to Arkansas City to surrender. At that time, much of present-day Arkansas was still under Union control and most of the town's residents were Confederate soldiers. Bella Vista remained in Confederate hands until May 9, 1865, when Union troops burned down the fort and captured all its inhabitants including many of the original settlers. In 1868, a group of Arkansans decided to move from nearby Pine Bluff to what is now Bella Vista because they found it too hot for Pine Bluff and thought it would be a cooler climate. The community grew rapidly during the 1870s and 1880s as people came from all over Arkansas to join its growing population. By 1890, Bella Vista had an estimated population of 10,000 people. During World War I (1914-18), dozens of women served in local military units such as the First Arkansas Infantry Regiment and First Red Cross Battalion; many remain unidentified today but are likely members of local historical societies or research organizations.) In 1923-24, several thousand young people from around Northwest Arkansas joined forces with others in Northwest Arkansas Regional High School in Bentonville for a summer program known as "The Great American Youth Expedition."
