In 1900, when Pulaski County was created from parts of Arkansas Territory, Benton became one of its six townships; it has since grown again as a bedroom community for North Little Rock and East Stroudsburg. Benton's economy has shifted more recently to services such as health care and government jobs; however, some of the original industries remain strong including tourism (especially around Mount Hope Cemetery). There are also several small businesses that have been sustained over time by their unique products or services. In recent years much attention has been paid to developing Benton into an urban area - with plans for both residential development and retail space - but progress appears stalled without further investment from county or city officials.

The town quickly grew to become one of the most important commercial and social centers in the county, with a population of around 100 residents in 1881. By 1910, Benton had grown to more than 2,000 residents, making it one of the largest towns in County Jackson. The town's economy was based largely on agriculture and ranching; during the late 19th century, Benton became a major center for cotton farming in Peach Bottom County. In 1925, Benton merged with neighboring Fort Smith to form the present-day city of Fort Smith.
