Benton, Arkansas is a small town in the Ozark Mountains of southern Arkansas. The population was 1,582 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Fayetteville–Springdale, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The national guard gift history in Benton starts with World War I on April 6th 1917 when Fenton Clements donated his car and trunk to the Arkansas National Guard for use as an ambulance during the war. On May 7th 1917, Benton's first post office opened with donations from local citizens including Mrs. Hoyle Ladd and Mr. J.D.. On October 17th 1919, Mr. and Mrs. Wm Bowers donated their house to become the first Armory in Benton which they dedicated to the state guard force along with a rifle range and storage area for military equipment. In 1924, General John Ewart Curtis became Commandant of the Arkansas National Guard and made it his policy to give all soldiers updated weapons as well as uniforms (at no cost). This started what would be known as The Curtis Era of National Guard gift history in Benton which spanned over 30 years! In 1935-1936, Colonel Elwood Bogan donated $1,500 towards building a new armory that was completed in 1938 by Captain Harry Ahern Jr.. During this time period Lieutenant Colonel Don Judd also contributed funds towards Armament Development Battalion No 2 which was responsible for developing new armaments for the National Guard including M1 Garand rifles and BARs! On November 5th 1944 Major General Leslie Ritchie presented gifts to members of the Arkansas National Guard who had served during World War II including swords decorated with oak leaves and gold stars! From 1945 until 1949 items were given out such as clothing, badges or other insignia such as helmets! It wasn't until 1951 when Sergeant First Class Ed Hunter began giving items such as books or radios/tapes!! Throughout these years many residents have participated through donation or purchase giving back into our community something that has helped make it unique!

Benton began as a Native American village on the bank of the Arkansas River. In 1847, General Andrew Jackson moved his army upriver to take advantage of Indian hostilities and drive them out of what became known as Benton County. The first white person to live in what is now Benton County was James Pritchard, who arrived in 1849. The town site was chosen by vote in 1870 from among five submitted proposals. In 1903, residents voted to make their town an incorporated municipality and it did so that same year. It has grown steadily since then, becoming one of the largest communities in Johnson County. Today, Benton offers its citizens a variety of services including a library system with over 100 items available for borrowing, farmland for agriculture and home-building purposes, two high schools (one public and one private), four churches (two Methodist and two Baptist), three professional sports teams (including baseball and basketball), seven bowling alleys/cafés/bars/history museums, as well as shopping opportunities at local malls such as Walmart and Sears stores as well as several smaller businesses such as convenience stores and gas stations. The economy of Benton is based primarily on agriculture which contributes about 60% of local income while other significant sources include manufacturing (15%), health care (10%) and government services (5%). Manufacturing employs about 80% of the workforce while health care contributions amount to 10%. Other major economic contributors are retail trade (5%) and service sector jobs related to banking ($2 million) or transportation ($1 million).

In 1861, the first national guard regiment was organized in Florida. In 1866, the first armored brigade was raised in Ohio. Today, the National Guard plays a significant role in our society by providing support to local law enforcement and military operations.

On July 1, 1907, Benton become a city and it has since grown into one of the largest cities in Arkansas with a population over 10,000 people.
On May 1, 1872, Benton was incorporated as a town. It had only one store and a population of about 50 people. On October 15, 1877, the first post office in Benton opened. The population had grown to 100 people by 1888. The first school in Benton was built in 1881. In 1889, the first Baptist church was built in Benton. The population of Benton reached 300 people by 1901. In 1916, two men named Cockerill founded the Arkansas National Guard at Bentonville and soon after moved to Fayetteville to tend to their unit there while they awaited orders from headquarters.
