The history of the military in Camden, Arkansas began with an influx of settlers in the early 1800s. The first military unit to be set up in this town was a militia company, organized on December 5, 1812. A small army detachment was also raised in 1816 and assigned to garrison duty at Fort Smith. In 1903, Camden residents voted to establish their own city government. The new city council quickly convened a committee to study ways to provide for the defense of the city against possible attack. This committee recommended that the city arm itself with firearms and make provisions for emergency evacuation should hostilities break out. The armed forces were also brought into play as part of this study when it was determined that a large enough population could not be militias alone and that a larger force would be necessary if war did occur. In 1911, Camden residents voted to annex adjoining towns of Carthage and Sweetwater into the City of Camden. As part of this annexation process, land surrounding Fort Smith was reserved for use as an army installation known as Camp Robinson. It wasn’t until 1934 that Camp Robinson officially became an Army post within the boundaries of Camden proper. Military service has always been an important Component of life in Camden; from our earliest days there have been soldiers stationed here! In 1914-1918, during World War I (1914-1918), Camden served noticeably as one of many American Cities which fought bravely against great odds under Generals Pershing and Wilson; ultimately resulting in victory over Kaiser Wilhelm II’s Germany! In World War II (1939-1945), we once again saw active service when our men answered call to serve overseas—-in both world wars we tripled our strength while living within our own borders! After World War II ended we slowly but surely shifted back into peacetime mode—-a mode often characterized by Rural/Metro political leadership who view Militarism not only as something valuable but essential given current circumstances Our Mayor at leastonce stated that he feels like “the armed forces stay here because they are needed” We currently have 2 Regular Army battalions stationed here—-one is 1st Battalion Arkansas National Guard (1ARNG) which arrived last year after 10 years absence from Camden due to budget cuts; and another is 3rd Brigade Combat Team (made up mostly retired USMC Commandos) based out Of Fayetteville currently deploying To Kuwait…..We are home front now just like any other place but remember all those deployments ago?

The Camden Army National Guard was organized on July 1, 1907. The unit was the first Independent Infantry Regiment in Arkansas. It was activated at Fort Smith and served in the Union army during World War I. On November 10, 1920, the Camden Army National Guard became a regiment of the Arkansas National Guard. The regiment's activation ceremony took place at Camp Chase where General John Pershing made his dedication speech. The regiment served as part of the Arkansas National Guard during World War II until it was mobilized on December 15, 1942 and activated at Little Rock Air Force Base to serve in the European Theater of Operations under Lieutenant Colonel James G. Brownlee Jr.. After spending two years training at England's RAF Broughton Field, the regiment sailed for Normandy on May 6, 1944 and fought its way across France to liberated Paris on September 8th 1945. The Camden Army National Guard returned to America and discharged its members in 1946.

The community also has strengths in arts and culture which include two performing arts venues as well as a library that serves the surrounding area. Camden is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. It was founded in 1871 by Abram C. Dixon and named for Camden, England. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. The town of Camden lies on the eastern bank of the Arkansas River upstream from the then-unincorporated community of Johnson City. The river forms the border between Camden and Johnson City. Dixon's decision to name his new town after Camden, England, was controversial at first but ultimately approved by the local board of directors. Dixon had long desired to move away from Jonesboro and its neighboring towns because they were all associated with slavery and Jim Crow discrimination. The first post office in Camden opened in 1872. A store operated there until 1902; it was replaced by a school that served as both a daycare center and a grocery store before being eliminated in 1979. The original Camden Baptist Church burned down in 1903 but was rebuilt following an arson attempt three years later; it still stands today as one of the oldest buildings in town.
