The United States Army has been deployed in El Dorado, Arkansas for over a century. The first time the army was stationed here was during the American Civil War. The El Dorado Volunteer Infantry Volunteers were an infantry regiment of the United States Army during World War I. The regiment was raised in 1917 and served in the American Civil War as a part of the 1st Arkansas Infantry Brigade. The volunteer regiment was redesignated as the El Dorado Infantry Regiment on September 15, 1918 and served in World War II as a part of the 5th Infantry Division.
El Dorado, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Haley metropolitan area. The first white man to visit El Dorado was James Fenton in 1837. He and his party were led by Major General John Custer during the Indian Wars. The town site was chosen because it had an abundance of black tailors who could make any outfit a person could want. A post office was established in 1838, and soon afterwards traders and pioneers started arriving to find out what all this new territory had to offer. By 1845 there were 12 merchants in the community and several hundred residents. On July 10, 1847, a group of 20 men gathered at Fort Smith for a meeting to discuss forming a territorial government for Arkansas Territory that would include El Dorado Township (later named for Captain William Hernando de Soto). The meeting resulted in the creation of the First Arkansas Territorial Legislature which formed on August 15th from parts of Webster County and Pulaski County with John Witherspoon as its first president. The idea behind creating this legislature was to give more representation to Arkansans living on the frontier while avoiding another civil war that would have plagued neighboring Missouri after Kansas attained statehood in 1850. A schoolhouse (later called White Sands) was built near present-day Paradise Valley Road in 1848 with $3000 taken from local livestock sales so that education could be provided for Arkansans living on the frontier without having their children attend schools located within easy reach of civilization or markets where goods could be bought and sold。 In addition to providing education for futureArkansas citizens, White Sands served as an arsenal during World War II because it housed weapons such as artillery pieces made by Colt’s Firearms Company until 1942 when they moved production inside Arsenal Hill Armory (). According to one source, “the most important people who shaped El Dorado are unknown but they are responsible for making sure today's economy works just like back then when goods were rarer than they are now” (). Another source states "The early settlers here … knew how hard it must have been [to survive] on less than $1 per day." In 1923 Orville Freeman donated land east of downtown which became home to White Sands Air Force Base which has since expanded into four separate complexes totaling . Today over 350 military personnel live and work at White Sands AFB including numerous Specialty Forces units such as Delta Force (), SEAL Team 6 (), Army Rangers ()and Navy Seals (). The first white settlement in El Dorado County was made by Capt. George Catlett and his men, who arrived on July 12, 1843. The town of Catlettville was founded on the east bank of the White River, just south of present-day downtown Rogers City. The first post office was established in Catlettville on October 4, 1843. In 1845 a Methodist Episcopal church was built in what is now Rogers City and dedicated to the memory of Capt. George Catlett. In 1847 a sawmill and grist mill were erected at Westport and Davis Streets in Rogers City; these mills were used to produce flour for local markets and also produced lumber for construction purposes. The population of Rogers City grew rapidly during this period due to the growth of agriculture, industry, and transportation opportunities along the Arkansas River Valley. By 1860 the city had reached its peak with a population of over 100 residents. However, Richmond soon emerged as the leading center of trade and commerce in El Dorado County due to its location on the riverbanks between Jonesboro and Rogers City, as well as its access to railroads which allowed for shipment of goods throughout central Arkansas
