El Dorado is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to live in what is now El Dorado were white settlers who founded the town in 1871. They named it after the city of Los Angeles, California. The early residents of El Dorado were also involved in livestock and mineral harvesting and ranching operations. In 1902, a post office was established in the town and by 1907 there were also three churches and a school. In 1907, an oil rig was sunk off shore in what is now known as Willow Creek Marina (just south of El Dorado). This initiated a period of economic growth for the town because it provided jobs for sailors and workers onshore while also providing income for those who invested in oil production offshore. By 1912, there were over 100 businesses operating in El Doradotown including stores, restaurants, hotels, dance halls, breweries and other businesses that catered to local residents as well as visitors from nearby cities such as Little Rock and Arkadelphia. During World War I, El Dorado native John McCloskey enlisted with the 8th Arkansas Infantry Regiment where he became an officer during combat on the Western Front; later he would become assistant adjutant general for Arkansas Military District No. 4A headquartered at Fort Smith writing legislation that helped improve military morale within his district In 1942 after World War II ended locals voted to join Butler County which made them one unit within Pulaski County . As time passed more people left or moved away from El Dorado but many African American families stayed until around 1970 when all black citizens of Pulaski County lost their voting rights due to state law changes . El Dorado is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,523 at the 2000 census. Located on the edge of the Ozark Mountains, El Dorado region has been home to many pioneer families for over 300 years. The first Europeans to visit this area were French and Indian traders who traveled through the area in 1795-96. In 1821, General James K. Polk sent a party of Americans including Colonel John C. Frémont upriver from St Louis to explore new land in western Arkansas and central Missouri. After traveling for two weeks, they discovered what became known as "The Great Western Trail". In 1824 George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry unit came across an Indian camp near present day El Dorado while exploring what is now southeastern Kansas Territory. This event led to American expansion into Central America and Mexico which turned out to be very beneficial for El Dorado as it opened up opportunities for its citizens to engage in fur trading and agriculture. By 1850, El Dorado had become one of the most important mining areas in Arkansas due to its gold resources that were exploited by miners such as James Fenton, who established his own company at Menardville on the White River in 1851. In 1870 United States vitiated by treaty between Mexico (then Republic of Texas) and US ended any claims by Mexicans living east of Ulysses S Grant's line about lands west of that line including present day Arkansas; see Grant Administration Treaty #10 & #11A . With this change came increased competition from railroads for access to natural resources throughout the state which created major problems for local communities like El Dorado during Reconstruction Period (1870-1877).
