The Arkansas Army National Guard, also known as the Arkansas National Guard, is a unit of the United States Armed Forces. The unit was formed on November 15, 1907 from the merger of two units: the 1st Arkansas Infantry and Company D, 2nd Arkansas Infantry Regiment. The first commander of the ARNG was Major General W.H.B. Stuart who served from 1908 to 1912. In 1916 Colonel John Tipton became Commanding General and led the ARNG throughout World War I until his death in 1918; during World War II he served as Deputy Commander-in-Chief for Military Affairs in Europe before becoming Commanding General, Third Army Headquarters in 1945. In 1957, three years after its inception as an infantry regimentSeparate brigades were established within it - Brigade A (later redesignated 1st Battalion), Brigade B (later redesignated 3rd Battalion) and Brigade C (later redesignated 4th Battalion). On October 17, 1959 Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron were established at Fort Smith with elements of brigade Combat Teams being concurrently activated at other military installations around Fayetteville while also providing air support to brigade combat teams under command of Air Intelligence Division Force Support Activity headquarters located at Fort Smith AFB; Squadron operations continued until March 1960 when all squadron elements including HQ & HS flew out of Fayetteville Municipal Airport due to low flying activity by Red Flag Demonstration Team organization operating out of nearby Mastronomia AFB during school weekdays only....... On September 30th 1961Combat Arms Training Unit No 740 - a Reserve Officers Training Corps detachment camped on White Sands Missile Range near Alamogordo NM was activated under Lieutenant Colonel Bruce Jordon commanding.... On October 11th 1964Commandant's Special Troops School detachment Camp Bowie TX was activated...... On December 12 1984Army Standard TimeA new battalion sized reserve armyNational Guard unit establishment arrived in Fayetteville when Company E 9th Arkansas Infantry RegimentBased at Fort Smiththe company initially consistedof 111 enlisted menand six officers................... The United States Army's gift history in Fayetteville, Arkansas began with the creation of the Arkansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment on November 12,1862. The regiment was organized at Fayetteville by General James S. Shields and Captain John H. Pettit. The regiment was mustered into service on December 3, 1862. On January 1, 1863 the regiment numbered 191 men and was reorganized as a battery battalion under command of Captain Edward M. Smith. On February 8, 1863 the battalion numbered 26 men and became a battery under command of Lieutenant Colonel John Wickersham Sr.. In 1865 the battalion numbered 507 men and became an artillery brigade commanded by Brigadier General Richard Hurlbut Jr.. In 1866 it reverted to Battery Battalion status and became subordinate to Brigade Commanding General David Hunter Groom’s Third Corps artillery forces in that army theater until its dissolution in 1868 due to budget cuts within that corps structure. In 1871 the battalion reverted back to Battery Battalion status and again become subordinate to Brigade Commanding General Thomas J. Gibson’s First Corps artillery forces in that army theater until its dissolution in 1875 due to budgetary cuts within that corps structure. Aftermath of World War I: Brigadier General David Hunter Groom's Third Corps artillery forces were disbanded June 15, 1918 because there were no longer any active duty military units assigned to provide cannon fodder for World War I veterans' benefits purposes; all remaining cannons fromBattery Battalion#1 (now Battery Company) located at Fort Smith AR were turned over effective September 16th 1918 for burial/ storage purposes at Ft Smith Arsenal National Military Park
Fayetteville is a city in the U.S. state of Arkansas, and the seat of Fayette County. The population was 29,457 at the 2010 census. It is one of Little Rock's most populous cities and has been nicknamed "The Wall Street of the South" for its concentration of financial firms. The downtown district is home to many large businesses, including Barnes & Noble and Coca-Cola Bottling Company. Fayetteville was founded on December 7, 1824 by General James Wilkinson as Fort George Washington on what is now known as Elm Street in what is today the business district of Fayetteville. When Wilkinson died in 1828, his son John Wilkinson took over command of Fort George Washington and made it his headquarters until he succeeded his father in 1832. In that year, Fayetteville became an independent city under the name City of Jonesborough with a population of 15 residents. The first store opened in this city on October 3, 1836 by Solomon Davenport Jr., who later became general manager for the Illinois Central Railroad company.. Fayetteville is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 10,817 at the 2010 census. Fayetteville is the county seat of Pulaski County and home to the University of Arkansas Fayetteville campus. It has been called "The Birthplace of Arkansas" due to its early history as a small frontier town. The first settler in what is now Fayetteville was James Hickey, who arrived in 1799. A local doctor, Dr. John Mclntyre also founded a hospital there in 1813 which became known as Mclntyre Hospital and still stands today on Main Street near where the University of Arkansas main campus stands today. Fayetteville's early growth was based on agriculture and trade with nearby towns such as Hot Springs and Little Rock. In 1853, Fayetteville became one of the first incorporated towns in Arkansas when it adopted a new form of government modeled after that of Texas City, Texas. This new form included a mayor-council system with three mayoral positions instead of one mayoral position per ward like those existing in Arkadelphia and Springdale. In 1872, an important development for the town occurred when Presbyterian missionary Revs Washburn and Philips founded Central Methodist Episcopal Church there - one of only two churches established in what is now Fayetteville by white missionaries (the other being First Baptist Church built by African Americans shortly thereafter). In 1915, during World War Iony I (1914-18), General John J Pershing designated Fayetteville as headquarters for his 8th Infantry Division which was then operating out of Fort Riley on Kansas' eastern border.
