Fayetteville is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fayetteville was founded in 1871 by James Fenton and others as a stop on the then new Arkansas Pacific Railroad. The city was named for General Lafayette Hill Fenton, who had been killed in action during the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in 1872, and rapid growth led to the creation of a city government in 1887. In 1915, Fayetteville became one of thirty-six American cities designated by then President Woodrow Wilson as sites for black urban education projects known as "The New Negroes." Fayetteville's downtown area contains several dozen original buildings dating from before 1870 including an early Methodist church and hospital building now used as an arts center; the old Central School; and several hotels which have been converted into apartment complexes or other uses over time. One notable development that took place during this time period is the erection of more than two dozen large brick blocks west of downtown called "the Brickyard" which housed many local businesses side by side until demolition began in the late 1990s following heavy rains that caused extensive flooding throughout much of downtown Fayetteville
