This change came about due to new laws that were passed throughout Arkansas aimed at reducing crime rates among minority groups. In 1936, Gun Owners' League (GOL) member Leroy Holmes opened what would become known as Holmes & Sons Pistol Shop on Main Street in downtown Fayetteville. For over fifty years, Holmes & Sons remained one of Fayetteville's most popular handgun dealers and helped expand access to handguns for all citizens alike. In 2007, Holmes died at age ninety-six after many years spent serving GOL members and others who relied on his sales expertise. His shop remains an important part of local firearm history today and can still be found within walking distance from most residents' homes."
