Fayetteville, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 10,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Fayetteville was founded in 1836 and named for General John Fayette. The first post office in Fayetteville was established in 1837. Fayetteville is located on the banks of the Arkansas River, about south of downtown Little Rock and north of Bentonville. U.S. Route 44 runs through the town center and Interstate 5 passes to its east near the city limits. As one of several small towns situated along what used to be a major southern route before Interstate 540 connected Little Rock with Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan areas, Fayetteville has long been an important transportation hub for both rural residents and larger cities to which it connects via I-540 or US 44. Fayetteville is a city in Arkansas, United States. The population was 17,816 at the 2000 census. It is the most populous city within the Arkansas metropolitan area and one of the largest cities in the state of Arkansas. Fayetteville is located on the eastern edge of Little Rock, at the confluence of two rivers: the Arkandale and White Rivers. Fayetteville was founded by General James Longstreet and his group of Confederate cavalry officers after they were driven out of Fort Smith by Union forces in 1864. The firstaucasian resident in what is now Fayetteville was John Crouch who arrived there from Mississippi around 1875. In 1886, when Fayetteville became an incorporated town, it had a population of 10 people and consisted mostly of Native Americans from surrounding Indian Territory who had been forced to leave their homes due to treaty violations by Kansas and Texas. In 1924, Fayetteville annexed part of Pulaski County which made it one of only two cities in Arkansas with a county seat outside its own city limits (the other being Benton). In 1970, however, Fayetteville seceded from Arkansas because it felt that its rural character did not meet quality standards demanded by metropolitan areas such as Little Rock or Monticello.[1] The original plat for what would become today's downtown Fayetteville was filed on November 15, 1865,[2] less than four months after General Longstreet's surrender at Appomattox Court House following his successful campaign against Jubal Early's Confederate army across Virginia. At that time Dixie Planner Elijah Porter designed streetscape features typical for large Utopias like those found near San Francisco or Austin; wide sidewalks flanked by grandstand-like buildings built on 14 stories high with mansard roofs ornamented with Ionic columns; many trees lining blocks between street corners; lawns shaded beneath huge elm trees.; significance derived from location near military installations during Reconstruction period;[3][4][5][6] Today much has changed since then including increased manufacturing activity along Interstate 20 which surrounds downtown (particularly along Seventh Street), suburban growth nearest Interstate 35 (including North Little Rock – home to Walmart – as well as several new universities), suburban exodus away from central business district boundaries towards more walkable neighborhoods with easy access to transportation
