Navy gifts have been a part of the Fayetteville community for many years. The USS Constitution is one of the oldest warships in the United States Navy and was donated by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter in 1898. The USS Constitution also served as the flagship for Commodore Edward Preble during World War II. The USS Enterprise, a nuclear-powered submarine, was donated to the Fayetteville Naval Shipyard in 1969. It has been serving as an training ship for naval officers since then. In 1985, the USS Benson was donated to the Fayetteville Naval Shipyard, becoming the first warship ever donation from Arkansas. It is currently used as a classroom vessel and research lab. In 1990, two decommissioned submarines were gifted to Fayetteville Naval Shipyard by their respective countries- Norway and Australia- signalling a new era for naval gift history in Arkansas. These two submarines form one of CSS “Tiger” class ships that are now stationed at Gadsden Marine Base on Mobile Bayou in downtown Fayetteville. Since then, many more warships have been donated to Fayetteville Naval Shipyards including several destroyers and frigates along with numerous helicopters and boats. Finally, on November 15th, 2018, it was announced that HMS Queen Elizabeth would be joining our navy soon! This will add even more variance to our gift history; ensuring that no single event dominates our community like this!

Fayetteville is a city in Arkansas that was founded on August 27, 1824. It is the county seat of Fayette County and has a population of over 153,000. The city was named for General Lafayette, who helped defeat British forces in the War of 1812. Fayetteville is located in the eastern part of the state and sits on the Arkansas River. The river forms much of the municipal boundaries of Fayetteville. As one of only two cities in Arkansas with an airport (the other being Little Rock), Fayetteville has seen its share of aviation activity over the years. In addition to providing landing strips for small planes and helicopters, Fayetteville also hosts an annual air show which features both civil and military aircraft as well as demonstrations by local businesses and organizations. The history of Fayetteville goes back to 1824 when it was founded by General Lafayette, who had fought against British forces in that year's War of 1812. Inaugurated as a town, it grew quickly due to its location on the banks of the Arkansas River near what would later become downtown Gadsden City. By 1830, Fayetteville had become a large enough community that it decided to secede from neighboring Union County and form its own government under a new charter issued by Governor John McLaws II. During Reconstruction era efforts to end slavery in America following The Civil War, locals voted overwhelmingly to remain within Confederate States regardless of whether they supported slavery or not. This decision marked one important turning point in Fayetteville's history; prior thereto, many residents had been initial supporters or even participants in slaveholding practices themselves (albeit behind closed doors). Ultimately however their political convictions led many people within Gadsden City – including many merchants – to leave their homes during Reconstruction period racial uprisings throughout Arkansas resulting primarily from southern hostility towards any form black enrollment at white colleges/universities despite being federally recognized as such entities (i.e., Brown University & Vanderbilt University). In 1895–96 Gadsden City again became involved with race-based unrest when African American students at some nearby white universities were refused admission because their families could not afford tuition rates setby state officials at those institutions largely due to economic hardship caused by increased cotton prices following Andrew Johnson's Emancipation Proclamation days earlier (see "A History Of Black Education In Arkansas"). After several months' implementation by then-Governor Orval Faubus III overseen by then-Chief Justice Archibald Cox himself, these students were finally admitted using written recommendations from college trustees rather than through open admissions procedures mandated pursuant to state law at that time - thus putting an end once again to Gadsden City's involvement with race-based conflict during this period (and continuing into present day).
Fayetteville is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 26,032 at the 2010 census. Fayetteville is the county seat of Pulaski County. It is part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Arlington metropolitan area. Fayetteville was founded by Colonel James Fenton and his brother General John Fenton on November 4, 1824 as a trading post on the Arkansas River. The original town site was two miles north of present-day downtown Fayetteville. In 1828, Colonel James Fenton and his wife Elizabeth built the first brick courthouse in what is now downtown Fayetteville. In 1840, Judge Andrew Johnson became the first justice of the peace in Arkansas and served until 1851 when he resigned to run for president on the Republican ticket. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down most of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor which led to Ulysses S Grant's military invasion of Arkansas that year. On December 12th, 1861 Major General Zachary Taylor marched into town with over 60 thousand men to suppress a slave insurrection at nearby West Point and routed an entire Confederate force including Colonel James Fenton's own regiment within minutes - thus ending any hope that future small towns like this one could successfully resist Union advances during the American Civil War
