The Arkansas Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment was activated in Fort Smith, Arkansas on December 15, 1940. The battalion served in World War II as a unit of the United States Army Forces Europe. After the war, the battalion was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma before being sent to Japan in 1951. The battalion returned to Fort Smith in 1957 and played a role in the Vietnam War. In 1970, when the 1st Battalion arrived stateside, it was reactivated as part of Division III of the Arkansas National Guard and served with distinction during Operation Desert Storm. Following that deployment, division headquarters moved from Little Rock to Fort Smith and all units were redesignated 2nd Brigade Combat Team - 9th Infantry Regiment on October 1, 1992. As part of brigade-level command structure changes effective January 1, 2009, Headquarters and Headquarters Support Command - 2nd Brigade (9th Infantry) relocated from Little Rock to Fort Smith and all elements were redesignated as 3rd Brigade Combat Team - 9th Infantry Regiment effective February 17; however this change did not take effect until after budget cuts had taken affect on March 1 which eliminated combat brigades within divisions throughout Arkansas for budgetary reasons. Withdrawal of military personnel from installations throughout Arkansas had already begun prior to these reductions so none of the new units were activated or deployed until after their arrival; however upon their activation they reverted back to their previous unit assignments with no direct support from division headquarters located in Little Rock. Fort Smith, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 109 at the 2010 census. Fort Smith was founded on November 16, 1867 by General James H. Wilkinson and Colonel George A. Cushing to protect settlers from the Comanche Indian tribe. The fort served as a garrison for over fifty years until it was abandoned in 1912. The history of Fort Smith, Arkansas begins with the arrival of white settlers in 1821. The town was founded by Captain John Sitton on land he purchased from the Creek Nation. The first settler in what is now Fort Smith was James W. Troup, who built a cabin in 1825. By 1830,Fort Smith had a population of about 400 people. A fortuitous alignment of the Arkansas and Missouri Rivers made for good agricultural land and increased trade between Fort Smith and other towns in central Arkansas; this helped to support the growth of Fort Smith. In 1836, Major General Ashley ordered Colonel George Armistead to establish a military post at Fort Scott on White River to protect settlers living along the riverbanks from Indian raids. In 1840, due to problems with malaria and yellow fever among soldiers stationed at Ft Scott, Ashley ordered Colonel Samuel Kirkland to establish an all-black regiment called the 1st Arkansas Infantry Regiment at Fort Gibson on Black Warrior River (now part of Oklahoma). The regiment's first unit arrived in November 1840 and began training under Captains Daniel Boone and John Wesley Powell that winter. On February 3rd,1841, Colonel Kirkland's 1stArkansas Infantry Regiment relieved Captain William Hays' 2nd Squadron Alabama Cavalry Regiment during a battle near present day Poteat County, Oklahoma when Confederate forces attacked United States Army troops under General Edward Beauregard. The Battle of Wilson's Creek was fought on October 14thnear present day Tulsa after Confederate forces attacked Ulysses S Grant's army following their victory at Pea Ridge (October 7–10). Aftermath saw over 150+ Union casualties killed or wounded as well as several hundred captured Confederates including Generals Forrest and Pickens; this loss significantly weakened Confederate army morale before its defeat at Chickamauga two weeks later on October 23rd near Chattanooga Georgia. This event helped convince President Abraham Lincoln to order Grant to attack Atlanta instead which led to his successful campaign against Robert E Lee during the Civil War thank you very much!
