The regiment eventually moved to Missouri in 1836 and then Texas in 1845. In 1862, the 1st Infantry Regiment of Arkansas moved from Arkansas to Mississippi as part of the Union Army's invasion of that state. Afterward it served under General Joseph Ewing at Corinth and Vicksburg before being mustered out on November 30, 1865. Following its service with the Union Army, the 1st Infantry Regiment of Arkansas reactivated on October 20, 1870 as a cavalry battalion under Colonel John Custer for service in the Mexican-American War. In January 1871 it was redesignated as the 3rd Cavalry Battalion and attached to District 7th Cavalry Corps under General Lew Wallace. The battalion fought during Santa Anna's Offensive against Mexico City on April 25-27,1871; however no medals or awards were given for this engagement due to lack of documentation. In 1898 when Confederate forces burned down Fort Sumter some members ofthe 3rd Cavalry Battalion (now known as Black Knights) volunteered to go into action and clean up what had been done. They successfully surrendered without any fight on April 12th after an eight day siege by Federal forces at Mound Hill near Columbiaville South Carolina while most units within District 7th Cavalry Corps withdrew north towards Memphis Tennessee.)

The Harrison, Arkansas Army National Guard unit was organized on December 15th, 1921. The unit was named the 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment Arkansas Infantry. On May 10th, 1942 the battalion was redesignated as the 2nd Battalion, 9th Regiment Arkansas Infantry and assigned to the 442nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team of III Corps. The brigade combat team fought in World War II in Europe and also served in the Korean War. Afterward they were disbanded on October 1st, 1952.
