Helena West Helena is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock-Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Helena was founded in 1871 by John Denton and named after his wife, Helena. Helena is located on the Arkansas River about 15 miles northeast of Arkadelphia and about 20 miles southeast of Pine Bluff. The first post office in Helena was open in 1871. In 1913, it changed its name to West Helena to avoid confusion with nearby Pine Bluff. The new post office closed in 1937; it reopened as a bank in 1959. In 1932, the West Helena Volunteer Fire Department was organized; it still exists today as a volunteer fire department with 9 members. According to the USGS National Map of Arkansas, Helena is located at (36° 36′ 44″ N 83° 02′ 08″ W). According to the 2010 census, its population was 1,965 people living within a total area of . Helena West Helena was born in 1892, the only child of John and AddieWest Helena. Her father was a cottonseed farmer who died when she was very young. She attended public schools in her home town until 1912, when she went to Central Arkansas State Normal School where she studied history and anthropology. After graduation, West Helena worked as a teacher for two years before becoming an instructor at Central Arkansas State Teachers College from 1915 to 1918. In 1919, she married Charles C. West Helena, Jr., a native of Arkansas who had come to the United States to work on his family's farm. The couple moved to Little Rock in 1920 and began their own family. They were lifelong residents of Helena-a community that they helped founded-and became involved with local politics and business affairs. Helena West Helena served as first lady of Little Rock from 1923 until 1929 and again from 1933 until her death in 1945. As First Lady, she encouraged economic development in the city through her role as chairwoman of the Arkansas Development Authority and her sponsorship of various cultural events including the Little Rock Folk Festival and the Arkadas Theatre Company's production of Oklahoma! In addition, she played an important role in developing social programs such as Head Start and Public Libraries while working tirelessly on behalf of women's rights issues. After her death, West Helena's legacy continued to be felt throughout Arkansas: her husbandCharles C.West Helena III adopted daughter Bettye (1946-2008) after his wife died; he also founded the Bettye Crouch West Helena Foundation which helps underprivileged children throughout Arkansas; he also named one street after his late wife following his death; among other accomplishments, he is considered among the most significant figures associated with post-WWIILittle Rock
In 1871, Helena was named after the then-president of Arkansas, James K. Polk. The town grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century due to its location at the crossroads of two major railroads and its position as a stop on stagecoaches that brought people from all over Arkansas and Missouri to see the area's natural wonders. In 1912, Helena voters adopted a city charter which made it one of the first towns in Arkansas to have this type of charter. By 1920, Helena had become an important transportation hub for easternArkansas because it served as both a terminus for Stagecoach Lines trains that traveled between Little Rock and Memphis and also served as a jumping off point for passenger cars traveling westward along the Arkansas River Valley.
