Hope, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 704 at the 2000 census. The community began as a small settlement on the western edge of what is now Hope Township and was named for Captain John Hope of the USS Constitution (1812-1814) during the War of 1812. The first school in town was built in 1827 and the first post office was established in 1829. Hope grew rapidly due to its location along one of two wagon trails that crossed the Arkansas River near present day Hope. In 1868, construction began on what would become Main Street and it opened to traffic in 1870. By 1893, Hope had a hotel and six stores. A railroad reached town in 1903 and by 1905, Hope had over twenty businesses including three banks, four churches, three schools, an opera house and a sawmill. In 1916 both main streets were widened and renamed MarketStreet after Grover Cleveland's Vice President Alpheus Henson Market who served as mayor from 1915-1916. In 1941 Main Street was also widened to four lanes with new development on either side including an elementary school (grades K-5),library/mall complex (Grade 6 through 12), high school (grades 9 through 12), civic center complex (formerly known as "The Ark") and twelve motels across from each other onFour Mile Road which became downtown business district between Highway 59/I-40 Business Loop east of downtown Pulaski County limits . During World War II most of downtown Hope became housing for soldiers barracks while portions of Four Mile Road were turned into military road leading into El Dorado Barracks located adjacent to Interstate 40 west of Pulaski County limits
