Hope, Arkansas is named after the biblical city of Jericho. The town was founded in 1907 by Judge John Hope and his wife, Belle. The town was originally known as "New Hope" because it had been promised to the Methodist Church by President James K. Polk in 1849. In 1927, the name of the town changed back to Hope after a referendum approved changing it from New Hope to honor Judge John Hope and his wife, Belle. In 1936, coffee beans were first roasted in Hope. At that time, the only place where coffee could be Roasted fresh was at an old mill on the edge of town where Mrs. Willughby's grocery store used to stand. Coffee beans were hand-chopped into small pieces and roasted over an open fire until they became light brown and smelled like coffee. Today, some roasters still roast their coffee directly over an open fire using a small wood burning stove which gives off a strong coffee flavor and aroma! The history of coffee in Hope goes back even further than that – one of the first farmers who cultivated Coffee here was Abram Smith who lived on what is now Highway 177 near present day Buchanan City limits in 1887! Abram Smith did this because he knew how important it was for commerce to have access to quality Coffee!
