Hot Springs is a small town located in Grant County, Arkansas. It was founded in 1881 by J.D. Swigart and Phebe Easley as a stop on the road between Little Rock and Fayetteville. The first post office was established in 1883, and Hot Springs became an incorporated town in 1907. The population of Hot Springs increased from about 100 people in 1880 to over 1,500 people by 1910. In 1925, the Arkansas Legislature designated Hot Springs as the state's capital city, but the merger of several smaller towns into Hot Springs led to its eventual decline in population until it reached its current level of around 500 people in 2000.
