The city prospered during Reconstruction thanks to its status as a transportation hub and its ability to maintain connections with Atlanta and other southern cities. However, following the Civil Rights Movement, Jacksonville began to experience significant economic decline which can be traced back toJim Crow laws which discriminated against African Americans. In 1969, Racial integration took place in Jaguarsport through a program called desegregation known as "Operation Greenback." This event helped start a process that has seen increased population growth throughoutJacksonville over the years; however, given how race still plays a role in many aspects of local life today there is still work to be done for all citizens alike.
