Jacksonville is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Jacksonville is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Aberdeen Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Jacksonville was first settled by Native Americans in the early 18th century. The town of Jacksonville was founded on August 6, 1851 by Jethro Rice and James Leatherwood as a trading post between Fort Smith and Arkadelphia. In 1853, Jacksonville became one of five towns within Arkansas Territory when it was ceded to the United States following the Kansas-Nebraska Act. On November 3, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down most of Jacksonville after artillery fire from Union forces destroyed their arsenal there. The city's original name may have been derived from "Jax" (a corruption of "Arkansas"), which meant "place where trees grow." In 1865, following Reconstruction efforts led by President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S Grant, Jacksonville became an important hub for African American cotton salesmen who had fled to Arkansas during the war years. By 1870, almost all white residents had left or been forced out of town as Reconstruction ended with military occupation by Confederate forces. In 1871–72 Fort Hays Indian School opened in what would become known as Teachers Village adjacent to present day Veterans Memorial Park southeast of downtown; it served as a training ground for future Arkansas state legislators and local officials until its closure in 1995 amidst budget cuts caused by Congress’s failure to fund education priorities nationwide during Clinton’s presidency. During this time period also new businesses were established in downtown Jacksonvile including Jardine's Glass Workshops & Salons (1873), Barnes Brothers Hardware Store (1875), Fenton's general store (1883), and Ransom Piano Company (1892). A streetcar line called the "Jacksonville Streetcar" began service on May 1st 1888 from downtown to milepost 7 on Main Street serving mostly lower-income residents until it ceased operations on December 31st 1937 due to financial reasons related to World War II troop movements into and through Florida; however streetcars still serve as nostalgia symbols throughout much of southern Pulaski County today using vintage tracks dating back to 1926! The construction boom that followed World War II created many jobs for men in Jacksonvillle but also resulted in increased traffic jams on State Road 906 which ran east-west through town center creating what is know today as Rooster Alley leading into Downtown along Pines Avenue past current location Brunswick Drugs before becoming University Boulevard continuing south towards Interstate 25 just past current location Gadsden Electronics cornering Rooster Alley near present day Maurer's Clothing store now collectively known as 'Olde' JJB Mart locations across several blocks surrounding Historic District include: Beasley Hardware Store(1910) - located at 400 N Broadway now known as First Baptist Church - original building erected about 1890 under auspices of slaveholders' Benevolent Society built around 1900 containing meeting room/marketplace adjoining former grocery store operated by father & son John & Jesse Beasley longtime proprietors; gotterys hardware house open 1895 next door - date unknown; old red brick building on north side occupied by Gadsden Telephone Co.; restaurant 1924-1965 - closed 1985 As segregationist attitudes within America grew more entrenched beginning with President Harry Truman’s administration “Operation Breadbasket” which targeted black families living in rural areas with incomebelow 150% federal poverty level were ordered executed starting January 20th 1946 these included Jonesboro Farmer’s Market owner James Earl Jonesgrove and his family residing at 124 White Oak Drive now home to Lowndes Furniture stores since 1978
