The Little Rock Arsenal was a military ammunition and artillery depot in the city of Little Rock, Arkansas. The arsenal was founded in 1871 by Major General John C. Frémont as part of his conquest of Arkansas from the Mexican Empire. It grew rapidly, becoming one of the largest armories in the United States by 1892. In 1916, it merged with the Fort Smith Arsenal to form the Little Rock Arsenal and Defense Establishment (LRADE). The Little Rock Arsenal served as an important focal point for Confederate munitions during the American Civil War. It is the second most populous city in Arkansas after Fayetteville. The city is located on the Arkansas River about 25 miles (40 km) east of Little Rock and includes all of north Little ROCK County as well as a small portion of south Little ROCK County. The first settlement in what becameLittle Rock occurred on May 20, 1827 when Isaac Malcomson founded an agricultural colony known as Prairie du Chien. By 1830, Malcomson had developed into a prosperous businessman and entrepreneur who donated land to become downtown Little Rock. He also built two large cotton plantations within what became Little Rock City Limits - "Malcomston Place" and "Moses Muggs". In 1834, Arkansan General James K. Polk arrived in honor of President Andrew Johnson's visit to Union Headquarters at Fort Sumter in South Carolina with orders to march on Washington D.C., if necessary to free Negroes held by Confederate authorities. As he approached Camden Yards near downtown Little Rock,Polk noticed that many buildings were unoccupied and called out for traders or citizens who might be inside; no one answered him. He went into the building next door, where he found four white men - three merchants from New Orleans working for John Brown - engaged in trade with local black laborers who had been captured during Confederate military operations against Fort Sumter some weeks earlier. Polk asked them how many slaves they owned; they replied "$50 worth". Polk ordered them not to sell any more slaves until he could get back to Union Headquarters; they complied without complaint (the event is mythologized as "The Day Lincoln Came To town").
