Little Rock, Arkansas, is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, and the seat of its county. The population was 975 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock-Fayetteville-Springdale metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Little Rock was Nicholas Sparks in 1819. At that time the region consisted of only scattered farms and country homes. One important early citizen was John Jethro Gibbs who helped found Arkadelphia in 1824 as a trading post between East Tennessee and Arkansas Territory. In 1830, he partnered with James K. Polk to purchase 6 acres (2 km²) east of downtown for $5 per acre ($140 per hectare). This land became known as "Gibbs Hill". In 1865,Arkansas Territorial Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered all men under 30 years old to leave the territory or face forcible expulsion from it on horseback. As many as 4,000 Arkansans chose exile instead of joining Forrest's forces during the Battle at Fort Smith later that year. A few thousand more left after Forrest's surrender at Mobile Bay on July 10th, 1865. In 1867 Little Rock became an incorporated town when six other towns in Pulaski County seceded from Arkansas to form Johnson County (later renamed Pulaski County). The first mayoralty were held by George Washington Morse and Fenton Wiley until they were forced out by local residents challenging their election results Nov 1st 1870 due to fraud allegations levied against them by citizens concerned about possible secessionist activities within the cities of Little Rock and Fayetteville which had formed respectively adjacent to Johnson County lines since those dates without any implication from either party or government officials thereof - this event remains one of most significant political challenges faced by Little Rock civic leaders prior to its incorporation into present day Pulaski County
