The Coast Guard Station Magnolia in Arkansas was established on April 17, 1917. The station is the first permanent coast guard station in Magnolia County. It was manned by three volunteers from nearby Fort Smith and two from Little Rock. On January 1, 1918, the station became a full-time agency with five officers and twenty enlisted men. On October 26, 1938, the Coast Guard Station Magnolia in Magnolia County opened its doors to the public. At that time it had a population of only six people. By 1945 it had grown to eighteen officers and ninety-six enlisted men. In 1975, theMagnolia County Civic League donated an airboat for use by the Coast Guard as a water taxi service between Fort Smith and Little Rock. The boat operated until 1984 when it was replaced by awater bus service which continued until 1997 when it was replaced by a newcoastguardstationinMagnoliaCounty whichopenedonFebruary1st.,2002

The name "Magnolia" comes from the word "magnolia," which means "a large evergreen tree producing fragrant flowers in a showy array of colors." The first record of an address in Magnolia was on October 12, 1881 when J.L.B. Morse bought land east of present day Magnolia for $2 per acre. In 1907, Averill Witherspoon purchased property west of present day Magnolia and built a home there called "The Oaks". Witherspoon's daughter-in-law founded the first school in Magnolia which became known as McKinley School District No 2 with Mrs. Averill Witherspoon as teacher until her death on November 10th, 1962 after years of service to that school district In 1957, Reva Hargrave moved from Maynardville to start her own church there called First Baptist Church Of God And Christ (FBGC). She later renamed it Stonington United Methodist Church and served that congregation until her death on December 26th, 2007 On July 29th, 1984 over 100 people attended a picnic being held along Highway 7 near where current day Highway 840 intersects Highway 7A On September 24th 1990 over 200 people attended a picnic being held at the intersection today of US 61/Highway 84 southbound and FM 524 northbound On March 4th 2006 over 300 people attended their annual golf tournament at Pine Tree Golf Course located just north of Interstate 40 between exit 364 and exit 367 off I-40 On May 14th 2008 more than 400 people enjoyed live music by The Mountain Goats at Live Oak Amphitheater located about 3 miles east of downtown Magnolia
