Magnolia, Arkansas is an unincorporated community in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 93 at the 2010 census. It is located on U.S. Route 471 and the Arkansas River. The area that comprises Magnolia was first settled by European Americans in the early 1800s as part of what is now Pulaski County. The first post office was established in 1824 and named for Major General James Aiken Magnolia (1784-1850). He fought in the Mexican–American War and had a ranch near present-day Magnolia where he died in 1850. One of the earliest businesses to open in Magnolia was a store built by Peter Sellers in 1876. Other early businesses included a hotel, which opened in 1887, and a sawmill that operated from 1889 to 1916. In 1912, magnolias were planted along U S Route 471 to commemorate President William McKinley's visit to Arkansas during his "Triple Play" tour of the United States that year. The growth of Magnolia began to slow after World War II when many people left for jobs outside ofArkansas; however, it has continued to grow since then with new development announced each year. Magnolia is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 559 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Capitol Hill, AR-MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Magnolia was founded in 1881 as a postoffice called "Maggie". The first settler in Magnolia was John Pritchard. He and his family moved to the town from Camden, Arkansas in 1881. From 1886 until 1907, Magnolia had its own school board; however, this system ended when the state took over education in 1907. In 1906, J.D. McCullough built a sawmill on Wabash River near what is now Magnolia High School. McCullough became one of the most influential men in Magnolia during his time as owner and operator of the mill (and later also as mayor). The mill continued to operate until it closed in 1978 due to economic conditions within Pulaski County; however, it still remains a popular tourist attraction today. In 1913, construction began on what would become magnolia's first municipal building; this building still stands today and is used for community functions such as meetings and events. In 1941, magnolia added its first store - the towns only grocery store at that time - which helped support local businesses during World War II while providing local residents with essential goods and services necessary for wartime needs such as food production or munitions manufacturing. In 1974, magnolia lost its last grocery store when Walmart came to town; however, Walmart has since reopened the store and continues to serve customers through their nearby convenience stores/mall). Magnoliys have long been an important part of their community because they provide both cultural artifacts (like old pioneer furniture) and jobs for families throughout the year - something that has not always been easy to find elsewhere these days given recent economic trends within Pulaski County alone (although some small business owners have managed to keep going despite difficult times).
