On December 1, 1951, the Arkansas Air National Guard activated its 139th Fighter Wing at Maumelle. The wing was assignment to the 5th Bombardment Group stationed at Grand Island Army Air Field. The 139th FG became operational on December 8 and began patrolling the area around Grand Island and surrounding towns. On January 15, 1952, when a United States Strategic Air Command (USSTRATCOM) nuclear bomber departed from Grand Island for an unknown mission, the 139th FG intercepted the aircraft inbound and prevented its detonation over Arkansas. This action is considered one of the unit's most distinguished achievements during its time with the 5th BG. In early 1953, while stationed at RAF Fairford England, capabilities of America's first supersonic interceptor were being developed by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation under supervision of USSTRATCOM Headquarters in Omaha Nebraska. The 139TH FG received authorization to fly F-89Ds which became known as "Godzilla" Hornets due to their large size and slant down wings providing excellent interception performance against high powered bombers such as Boeing 707s and Pan Am Clippers operating out of RAF Mildenhall England. With this capability these Hornets soon became dominant over all other fighter units in Europe during that period when jets could not approach close enough to penetrate bombers without causing great damage or even loss of life! In 1954 F-89Ds were redesignated as "F-105s" after General Jimmy Dean USAF Chief of Staff who also served as Commander in ChiefAir Force Europe operations
Maumelle, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,764 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Saginaw, AR-MSA. Maumelle was founded in 1871 by J.K. Waddell and his wife Anna Belle Waddell. It was named after General James K. Polk's daughter, Emma (née Maumelle). The first post office was established in 1872 and the name changed to Maumelle in 1881. The first store in Maumelle were two stores operated by Mrs. John Grier and her husband Lewis Grier Sr.. In 1893, a store with a building and four acres (1 hectare) was built on Main Street by Cushman Hargrave and Fenton Mabus for $5,000 (). This store served as the nucleus around which other businesses grew over time: Agrable Hardware & Feed Store opened in 1895; Patton Dairy & Sales Co., later known as Patton Farms Poultry Ranch began operations at this location in 1896; First National Bank of Arkansas opened its doors at this location on December 12th, 1899 (); Simmons Bros.' hardware store became an anchor tenant at this location from 1901 to 1951 (); Edna Coulter's dress shop opened its doors at this location on November 21st, 1912 (); Mrs.(later Miss) Addison O'Neill reopened her clothing store at this address on February 14th, 1933 (). In 1957 the community had population of 2,020 residents when it lost its high school which closed down due to financial difficulties that year; however local parents banded together to reopen High School #2 just up the street (.pdf file - 3 pages) On July 15th 1969 during protests against racism throughout America following Dr King's assassination southernArkansas' most black town got national attention when citizens took to the streets to demand equal rights for their citizens while also protesting voter suppression tactics being employed by state officials shorty thereafter

Maury, commanding officer of the USS "Alabama" during World War II and namesake of Naval Air Station Jacksonville (1948-1953). The main industries are agriculture and manufacturing; however, there are some small businesses as well. The primary school system provides education for students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade along with vocational training opportunities for local residents. The town has one grocery store and three restaurants which serve a variety of food items including Kosher/Halal meats, Italian cuisine, western food and Moretti's Pizza
