Some of the most famous deployments include Operation Neptune’s Spear (1956), which saw Marines fight in World War II; Battle of Iwo Jima (1945), during which they were involved in one of the bloodiest battles of the war; and Battle of Fallujah ( 2003), during which they fought against insurgents. Mountain Home, Arkansas is a town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,876 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by John Witherspoon and his family as a small farming community. In 1915, the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of 621. Mountain Home is located on the Black Warrior River near its confluence with the White River. Mountain Home's first settler was John Witherspoon who moved from Tennessee to what is now Mountain Home in 1881. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the Black Warrior River. The following year, he married Fannie Hill and they began trading goods with other settlers in nearby Arkadelphia for horses and cattle. By 1885, Witherspoon had organized a local grain trade that included shipping flour from Illinois to Arkadelphia and selling bacon, eggs, butter and other items at local farmer’s markets throughout Pulaski County. In 1915, when Pulaski County was divided into two parts – East Pulaski County (later Little Rock) and West Pulaski County – Mountain Home became an incorporated municipality with a population of 621 residents pursuant to Act No. 168 of 1915 which granted municipalities such power over internal government affairs within their jurisdictions without prior vote or approval by the county commissioners or state legislators. This act provided for municipal incorporation when more than fifty percent of all voting members were registered in said municipality according to the 1910 census results; however no such ordinance ever passed through commission hands until 1959 when it was amended by Act No. 792 effective November 1st thereafter increasing Municipal Incorporation Limit from fifty-five percent to seventy-five percent registration within five years after ratification thereby making complete incorporation possible without further action by county commissioners or state legislators). The growth of Mountain Home during these early years paralleled that of Arkadelphia which had experienced similar agricultural prosperity due largely to investmentgenerated interest in water rights along both riverside properties respective western & easternArkansas totaling some 640 acres (240 hectares) once owned by James Haucke who donated part of this land including what is today Mountain home creek bed & stream frontage eastward reaching 4 miles wide (& extending upstream about 8 miles), consisting mostly low bluff country lying between watercourses: At one time there were several dams placed across stream beds eons ago but many have since been destroyed or removed leaving large areas open& vast meadowy fields watered only seasonallyby run off main courses rapids generally class III high waters current flowing generally NW out towards Gulfstreampipeline crossed approximately 3 times each way during floods year round creating numerous impassable rapids much below falls headwaters Some minor sandbars still exist today most notably N side entrance on creek where dam once stood; access road leading thereto continues approx 5 miles SW along riverbank beside old mill Site now occupied by petrochemical plant Follow US 58 south about 10 miles past Mill site Cont’d
Mountain Home was founded in 1867 by John Lewis and his brother, James. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Arkansas Pacific Railroad in 1876. In 1904, the town had a population of over 1,500 residents. By 1930, Mountain Home had become an all-white community with only a few African Americans living there. The town experienced significant growth during World War II as its citizens supported the war effort. After the war, mountain home became a primarily white community again and experienced declining population until it reached its current size in 1960.
