The Navy has been in Mountain Home, Arkansas for over a hundred years. The first naval base in the area was located at Fayetteville Naval Station in 1854. It was during this time that the Navy began its importation of native sailors to help with the war efforts. In 1865, the military moved Fayetteville Naval Station to Mountain Home and continued its operations here until 1906. In 1909, the navy founded the First United States Naval Academy at Fayetteville Naval Station. This college became one of America’s most prestigious institutions and played an important role in training future naval officers. The navy also established a naval hospital here in 1916 which continues to serve as a medical center today. During World War II, mountain home served as one of six naval bases across Arkansas responsible for providing essential supplies and support to our forces overseas. The navy also built two airfields here – Battle Ground Airfield (later known as Little Rock AFB) and White Sands AF – both of which are still operational today. Today, the Navy remains an important part of our community and provides many unique opportunities for service members and their families to connect with each other through education, fun activities, trade shows, weddings/bachelor parties and more.

In 1925, they established an electric company to power their lights and streetlights. During World War II, Mountain Home became one of the largest areas in Arkansas to support military production. After the war ended, many of the town's residents moved out into adjacent counties or left for other rural communities with similar demographics and amenities.
