The history of the Coast Guard in North Little Rock, Arkansas dates back to 1912. The first organized Coast Guard unit was called the First Naval Militia Regiment, which was organized on December 12th, 1912. At that time, the Navy had only a small detachment stationed in Little Rock. In 1915, the War Department requested that Congress establish a coast guard service for the western border of Texas and Kansas. On May 15th, 1915, Congressepassed an act authorizing creation of a corps of coast guard officers for this purpose. This original corps consisted of 36 men and was authorized to consist of four companies each with two directors and one chief warrant officer. The first company was activated on October 1st, 1916 at Fort Smith Arkansas as part as part of augmented existing military forces along Federal lines during World War I. On November 14th 1918 after World War I ended, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law legislation providing for citizens who were drafted into military service in any country to receive benefits including free passage through customs checkpoints while on their way home from war-time hostilities. As a result of this provision - called “the Wilson Act” – many soldiers who served in France during World War I received free passage through American customs posts when they returned home. After World War I ended, Congress passed legislation authorizing establishment of a National Defense Service Corporation (NDSC) to provide coastal security along the United States coastline with personnel drawn from both civilian and military sources subject to regulation by Homeland Security Director David Boren. The NDSC became operational on September 3rd 1921 under charter granted by President Warren G Harding with responsibility for protection along Interstate 10 from storm surges generated by hurricanes Katia and Harvey which struck Louisiana and Texas respectively on August 25th 1921). It is interesting to note that both Presidents Harding and Franklin D Roosevelt were members of both Houses Of Congress at that time! In addition to hurricane protection duty within our own borders (and also international waters), NDSC personnel played an important role in helping preserve order during several major disturbances across America during the 1920s such as: Waco (1929), Alcatraz (1937), Oklahoma City Bombing (1995), Red Flag exercises conducted off Hawaii in 1959(!), Desert Storm/Iraq 1991 etc… In 1969 congress passed an act entitled "An Act To designate certain areas along Long Island Sound as Marine Corps Air Station Farmingdale Light Sea Air Base" which designated Farmingdale Light Sea Air Base - then known as NAS Grand Forks - as homeport for Marine Aircraft Group One based at Long Island Sound Naval Air Station Folsom Field; also responsible for providing other aviation services assigned thereto including training squadron operations support functions ashore; station commanders included Commandant Vice Admiral John S Ladd commanding III Marine Expeditionary Force Fleet Component Commander assigned afloat; Headquarters Squadron Five aboard USS Coral Sea] During Operation Neptune's Spear Task Unit Three Hundred fifty-eight [of five squadrons] flew air strikes against targets near Baghdad oil refineries June 6-10 1973 employing Sidewinder missiles fired from UH-1N helicopters piloted by enlisted Marines operating outboard engines]. A total 149 missiles were used resulting in no losses or damage reported.. On March 3rd 1976 NAS Grand Forks terminated its relationship withMarine Aircraft Group One when it transitioned its aircraft operations ashore to NAS Jacksonville Florida due ship movement limitations resulting from overloading Army Traffic Control Center New York Harbor ]; concurrently station commander Maritime Forces Atlantic relocated all activities ashore at NAS Jacksonville Florida transferring jurisdiction AWAVE command authority acquired therefrom over Joint Task Force Gulf Stream 5 embarked aboard USS Stennis ] In 1987NAS Jacksonvilleactivated Helicopterborne Squadron Two hundred thirty three [of three squadrons], equipped with E-3B Skyraiders conducting maritime surveillance missions over eastern North Carolina using infrared Illuminator technology] Following completion Of Operation Coral Sea Task Unit Two Hundred fifty nine [of five Squadrons], helicopter operations transferred ashore operationally From NAS Jacksonville Florida To NAS Norfolk Virginia ]. Helicopterborne Squadron Two hundred thirty three [of three squadrons] is currently inactive pending disposition thereof.]

In 1881, John Pemberton built what would become his largest business in north Arkansas: Pemberton's Millinery and Dressmaking Establishment. This mill became one of the most important businesses in town and helped make North Little Rock one of the most prosperous cities in south-central Arkansas during the early 20th century. Pemberton also donated land to build what would become Memorial Park near downtown North Little Rock; this park today hosts a number of attractions such as a waterfalls, golf courses, shopping malls, restaurants and more. In 1962, following passage through Pulaski County by US Highway 65 which connected downtowns of Memphis (to the east) and Tulsa (to the west), North Little Rock was designated as an official center for both these cities – making it one of only a few contiguous counties within Arkansas with two major metropolitan areas designated as such at that time. In recent years however its designation has been lessened asMemphis has redeveloped its downtown while Tulsa has largely remained rural; however there are plans to revive all three roles over time
