The North Little Rock Naval Shipyard was one of the earliest naval shipyards in the United States. It began operations as the Arkansas Navy Yard on October 15, 1851. The yard served as a local armament and ammunition depot for both the Confederate States of America and the Union during the American Civil War. The yards finally closed on September 30, 1865, after suffering from financial problems. In 1942, Admiral Chester Nimitz gave orders to build five destroyers at North Little Rock Naval Shipyard. These ships were eventually named after various members of the Nimitz family: Chester W. Nimitz (1914-2001), wife Esther Jane “Sandy” Nimitz (1915-2012), their son Richard Burt Nimitz (1946-2007), their daughter Elizabeth Aileen “Liz” Nimitz Choate (born 1951) and their grandson William Halsey “Wally” Carlisle Nimitz Jr.(born 1952). Commodore James Eaves also ordered two corvettes built at North Little Rock Naval Shipyard—USS John F Kennedy(CVN 78) and USS Lyndon B Johnson(CVN 63)—in 1944. On November 4, 1945, Captain Glynn Semon handed over command of USS George Washington(CVN 71) to Captain Floyd Cramer effective immediately upon her commissioning into service at North Little Rock Naval Shipyard. On this occasion Rear Admiral Harry Ladd made an appearance along with other dignitaries including Vice President Joseph McCarthy who had just been elected Vice President that day. The first public event aboard USS George Washington was a review by Japanese forces before she departed Norfolk Harbor on December 7th en route to Leyte Gulf where she would join Task Force 58 which was attacking Lingayen Gulf in support of General Douglas MacArthur's campaign against Japan's Imperial Headquarters in Manila Bay. In late 1945–early 1946 USS George Washington took part in training exercises off California with Commander Fleet Marine Forces Base San Diego Group 8 until decommissioned February 3rd 1947 for conversion to a submarine tender; renamed SS Nevada 2nd Lt Col Charles Wohlstetter USNR assigned Jan 1 1949 when he took command from 2nd Lt Col Edward Pogue USNR; renamed Nevada SS Mayflower Jan 20 1949 when transferred from Navy Reserve Unit - Charleston MO; redesignated HSHS Enterprise Jul 6 1959 when transferred from inactive unit - Barnegat Light Coast Guard Station NJ In 1954–55 USS John F Kennedy underwent experimental trials with what has been called "the world's first nuclear torpedo" while stationed at Long Beach California under Submarine Squadron 9 USCG . She completed these tests on July 25 1955 while moored off Long Beach and then deployed back home to Newport News VAAugust 12 1955 after completing submerged launch practice torpedoes against now known as " Los Angeles". This type of testing is still being done today by Underwater Demolition Team operators outfitted with nuclear torpedoes USS Enterprise delivered her first nuclear torpedo on January 20th 1959 off Cape Canaveral Florida having completed submerged launch practice torpedoes against now known as "Los Angeles." HMS Enterprise spent most of her career serving out of Guantanamo Bay Cuba conducting anti-piracy patrols until decommissioned thereon Decommissioned February 17th 2003 Shore Leave April 10th 2003 Yankee GOOSE 5 total deployments underway October 16 2002 through Present

One of the most famous naval deployments in recent history was Operation Neptune’s Spear, which saw Japan launch an attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. North Little Rock, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. North Little Rock is home to ARTCO-L'Enfant Plaza and the Arkansas State Fairgrounds. The first known inhabitants of what is now North Little Rock were the Arapaho people who lived around present day Arkadelphia and points east for over two centuries before moving west in force about 1805. They built their teepees on top of Mount Carmel (now part of North Little Rock) and hunted along the White River. In 1829, when Arkansas became a state, some settlers petitioned to create a town here because they found it difficult to get supplies from Fort Smith due to Indian raids into northwestern Arkansas which had been going on for several years. On July 9, 1830, by act of the General Assembly, Abraham Lincoln was elected as its first mayor with John Waddell as his assistant; both men served one terms only until November 16th when John Waddell resigned due to ill health (he later died). In 1861 Andrew Johnson became president of America after being elected with help from members of the Ku Klux Klan which helped him gain power through intimidation and fearmongering campaigns against political rivals; he ordered all public buildings in Washington D.C., including City Hall and ARTCO-L'Enfant Plaza closed on February 14th effective immediately without any notice or explanation other than "the order has come from above" - an event that remains unexplained to this day despite numerous attempts by historians throughout history.
