Paragould, Arkansas is a small town located in Johnson County, Arkansas. The population was 1,854 at the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1881 by John and Martha Paragould. It is named after Paragould, Missouri. The community began as a farming settlement on the edge of a swamp where they acquired land from the United States government. In 1881, they built a log cabin and began to farm their land. They started out with corn and potatoes but soon became successful in producing hay, wheat, oats, and other crops. In 1912, they moved to their current location on an all-cash offer from the United States government for $2 per acreoom lot. They were able to build a new log cabin which still stands today.
