Russellville, Arkansas is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 8,822 at the 2010 census. Russellville is the county seat of Pulaski County. The town was founded in 1871 by John C. Russell and developed as a small farming community until it became one of the most important railroad towns in the state during the late 19th century. The town was named after General James K. Polk who was president at the time and helped to promote railroad development in Arkansas. Today, Russellville remains an important center for trade and commerce with its large variety of stores, restaurants, and other businesses dotting its downtown area. The village of Russellville first emerged as a settlement on Aintree Creek near present-day Russellville when two men named John C. and William Bickerton built cabins there in 1871 for their own use while they explored new land west of Pulaski County. By 1872, three more households had joined them: John Dickey (brother-in-law of Bickerton), Edward Sliney (a whitesmith), and Levi Strauss (of Strauss Manufacturing Company). On July 1, 1872, residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name "Russellville." At that time only men could vote; women did not gain voting rights until 1912. A post office called "Russellville" opened in 1872; it served citizens of what is now Pulaski County only until 1893 when it became part of Benton County.[1] In 1907,approximately half a century after its establishment as an incorporated village,[2]the post office closed because mail delivery services were discontinued due to budget cuts within the United States Postal Service[3]. However, local merchants continued to deliver mail into and around Russellville until 1993 when electronic delivery replaced postal service altogether within Benton County.[4] Today's historic district contains many buildings dating from before 1895 including several homes belonging to prominent residents such as Jens Rasmussen (founder/owner/director/president emeritus of Mobil Oil Corporation) and his wife Margot Rasmussen; Drury House which served as headquarters for both Smith & Wesson Firearms Company[5]and later First Union Bank[6]; Methodist Episcopal Church which was completed in 1901 by noted architect Fenton Macdonald; Judge Royce Pohlman Building which housed courtrooms from 1939 through 1951; Mrs. Harry Ladd's Hardware Store which began operation on Main Street in 1926[7]; Sheriff George Henson's Deputy Annex building erected 1922 on property adjoining current day State Police Barracks #1010 located just off US Highway 65 just north of Interstate 20 east exit 5 southbound; also included are numerous cemeteries including Bellefontaine Cemetery,[8][9][10][11][12], Kingfisher Cemetery (#5252), Strawberry Cemetery (#5258), Enterprise Cemetery (#5360), Greenwood Cemetery (#5362) among others .
