They built teepees out of pieces of willow wood or other trees they found while hunting game. In 1847, a group of settlers from Tennessee moved into present-day Russellville and began to build cabins and businesses. By 1851, most of what is now Pulaski County had been organized as Russellville Township. In 1850, two men named James Fenton and John Waddell started farming in what is now Benton County. When they found good land there, they decided to move their families there too. In 1861, when Confederate forces marched into Arkansas to take over Missouri after that state seceded from the United States, Fenton's family joined them in Confederate service and he became an infantry officer with Company I (7th Regiment Arkansas Infantry), 1st Brigade Combat Team Arkansas Army National Guard. After the war ended in 1865, many residents left for new opportunities in various parts of America; some returned later to work on their farms or open up businesses near their old homes. Some stayed behind where they started out: Fenton's son James took over his father's business until it failed in 1924; his grandson also operated a grocery store until it closed down in 1984; while others bought land elsewhere and developed rice plantations which are still active today (e.g., Bryant Farm).
