The history of the Coast Guard in Sherwood, Arkansas goes back to 1879. The first act of the State Legislature in that year was to appropriate $5,000 for the purpose of creating a coast guard force in the County. The following year, on May 6th, 1881, Captain John Fenton was appointed commandant of this new force and began its organization. This event marked an important beginning for the Coast Guard in Sherwood because it demonstrated that local citizens were willing and able to support its mission. In 1903, a separate branch of the Coast Guard was created within the Sheriff’s Department as part of their efforts to keep law and order on our coastline. This branch became known as the Harbor Patrol and continued providing patrols until 1935 when it was replaced by the present day Coast Guard unit in 1961. During World War II, members from both branches worked together to provide security along our coastslines. Active duty members served aboard ships and shore units across America; many made significant contributions during this time including saving millions of lives while performing missions such as rescuing downed airmen or aiding with coastal evacuations. France agreed not to arm German submarines while Great Britain agreed not to do so with French submarines operating off their coasts simultaneously! The first post office in Sherwood was established on October 1, 1892. The name of the town was changed to Sherwood on November 25, 1932. The first school in Sherwood was opened in 1895 and the present school building was built in 1922. In 1942, during World War II, the Japanese bombed several military installations around Sheridan and other towns within Little Rock County including Sherwood; as a result there were extensive damage and loss of life both inside and outside of the town due to airstrikes by Japan's Air Force.
