The community was founded in 1907 by settlers from Illinois and Michigan. It became a farm town with three churches, one school, and two grocery stores. In 1941, it had just under 1,000 residents when Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) members moved to the area from Arkansas City in Oklahoma because they were fear their forced relocation would lead to social ostracism in Sherwood. In 1948, the JACL began building an airstrip on what is now Hwy 14 west of town for use by Douglas C-47 Skytrain pilots training at Fort Smith Air Force Base near Fayetteville. The population of Sherwood increased rapidly after construction began; within a few years it had reached 2,500 residents and 120 businesses. In 1951, the first tornado touched down in Arkansas; damage done to homes and businesses in town was significant but not as extensive as that seen elsewhere in Pulaski County due to better engineering practices then being used at that time. During World War II many resident men served in the military or were drafted; many women also worked or raised families during that time period outside of homefront work activities such as sewing clothes for soldiers or cooking meals for them while their husbandsfolk were away fighting overseas. Many local citizens continued to do so until after V-E Day when most men returned home from war assignments and brought back civilian wives who took over many wartime responsibilities including running family households as well as some housekeeping functions which had been handled by women before hand. As post-war life settled into its own patterns people slowly stopped going out into the community aside from funerals and village meetings which are still held every Fourth of July since those days are considered historical events rather than current affairs warranting separate celebration events like weddings etcetera although there has been talk about reviving these events over recent years among some local officials however no formal announcement has yet been made public

It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock– existing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by John W. Sherwood and his family from Illinois. In 1907, the town had a population of 446 and it grew to 1,998 by 2000. The first settlers in what would become Sherwood were John W. and Anna Meeks Sherwood who arrived on March 15, 1892 from Illinois via railroads as pioneers of what would be known as the Arkansas Territory (now Pulaski County). They were followed by their children Hilda Mae (born October 25, 1893), John Wesley (born December 14th, 1895), Florence May (born February 6th 1897) and Vernon Lloyd (born March 9th 1899). In 1907 when the little town reached its current size it had a population of 446 residents including Mrs. Jane Aiken who had moved there from nearby Springdale with her five children in tow after her husband's death just one year earlier: James Aiken III; Constance Aiken; Fannie Jukes; George Eakin Jr.; Alvin Eakin II; James Wickersham Jr.. The community grew rapidly due to new construction projects such as an elementary school which opened in 1909 and post office which opened on November 3rd 1912 with only 10 residents mailing ballots that year! By 1920 the population had increased to 1,898 people living primarily within three blocks of each other with some scattered around rural areas outside of town limits. During World War II Sherwood served as an internment camp for Japanese Americans located within its boundaries during 1942-1945 under U.S military jurisdiction pursuant to Executive Order 9066 which targeted all "enemy aliens" regardless of race or national origin within certain geographical areas across America including Arkansas concentrated mainly along I-44 corridor linking Tokyo Japan with points south through Memphis Tennessee before reaching Little Rock Arkansas then north into Texas before finally terminating at Fort Worth Texas where most inmates were ultimately transferred off site prior to liberation on September 2nd 1945 following dayslong battle between American forces and Imperial Japanese Army forces fighting under General Hideki Tojo near Osaka Japan resulting in approximately 150 fatalities among over 500 thousand American servicemen/women during World War II not including those incarcerated here atSherwood
