Siloam Springs is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1877 by a group of Mormon settlers and named for the nearby Spring of Siloam. The first post office in Siloam Springs was established on February 10, 1878. The name change to its current form less than one year later when the railroad arrived and began serving the community as well as other settlements along the railway line. The school system which operated out of four schools from 1879 until 1906 had a total enrollment of 1,527 students when it closed due to budget cuts and lack of enrollment after World War II. In 1966, Siloam Springs voters passed an ordinance ratifying what is now known as the "Mormon Settlement Doctrine" which state that any person who has settled within 6 miles (10 km) of any LDS temple or religious group must be baptized into that religion and then registered with that temple's governing body. This ordinance has been used to keep many people living in Siloam Springs who would likely leave if they were not baptized into Mormonism or if they did not meet certain requirements set by church leaders. According to the United States Census Bureau, Siloam Springs has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,752 people,[2] 1,527 households,[3] 706 families residing in the town.[4] The population density was 174 people per square mile (68/km²). There were 1,907 housing units at an averagedensityof 80 per square mile (30/km²). When the first white settlers arrived in what is now Siloam Springs, Arkansas, they were greeted with a hostile environment. The area was full of natural resources and the natives were raiding the settlements for food and other items. As a result, the earliest white residents built themselves some rudimentary fortifications to protect their property. By 1820, however, these defensive measures had been abandoned and the community was quickly overrun by Indian attack. The local Native Americans did not know how to farm so they depended on hunting and gathering for their sustenance. In addition, they were not able to build permanent dwellings because of the lack of wood. So over time, many refugees from other nearby settlements began moving into Siloam Springs as well. This influx of people required new housing which was becoming scarce in surrounding communities due to development restrictions placed on them by their government officials. As more people moved into Siloam Springs, there also became an increased demand for water supplies which led to construction of a dams upstream from town site in 1835-1836. This project allowed farmers access to river water that previously had been unavailable to them because it flowed through native trails connecting tribes’ territories. By 1840, Siloam Spring had become a thriving small town with about 200 residents living in wooden structures called log cabins or “silos” (a word derived from SIl og meaning “cellar”). These structures consisted of two stories with large windows that could be opened wide during times of heat or cold weather so that villagers could get fresh air and receiveMail while outside the silos themselves (the doors remained closed during wintertime). Although logging continued until around 1870 due to prohibitive costs associated with transporting logs off-site overland then barging them upriver all the way back again, population growth led eventually to creation of several schools in early 19th century which gave rise to educational opportunities for local children who would otherwise have none (and often resulted in social outbursts among adults). By 1860 one third of all males age 15 or older lived inSiloam Springs; this number gradually declined throughout most if not all years thereafter until reaching about 10% by 1880 when it finally stabilized at approximately 25%. The town of Siloam Springs was founded in 1872 by a group of Arkansas pioneers. The town grew rapidly due to the Opryland amusement park, which was located nearby.
