In 1881, General George Armstrong Custer arrived here with his troops during America's War with Spain and soon after began mining coal near what is now Arkadelphia which led to some speculation that he might explore this area for oil or other minerals. After his death in 1886 Texas millionaire John Dickson bought land along the Arkansas River opposite Arkadelphia from Custer's heirs and began exploration of these areas also prospecting for oil etc.. When it became clear that no oil could be found here however Dickson donated much of this land including much of what now lies within Texarkana limits back to the state government so Texarkana could continue grow without assistance from outside sources! During World War II many residents fledTexarkana because it was bombed by Japanese bombers on April 6th 1945; one resident managed to survive until long after the city had been abandoned! The City Council decided not to rebuild due to financial difficulties – but instead declared themselves “ghost towns” while continuing operations outbuildings such as fire halls and garage entrances remain extant today! This has left much evidence remaining throughout downtown including several buildings dating back over 100 years evidencing how Commerce Street functioned prior TO THE CITY OF TEXARKANA BEING CONVENTIONALLY BOMBED !!

Texarkana was founded in 1836 by John A. Texarkana and his brother, David. The town grew quickly due to the natural resources located nearby and its location on the then-new Arkansas Trail. In 1840, the first courthouse was built and in 1845, the first post office opened. The town soon became an important transportation hub for settlers travelling eastward from Texas and westward from Arkansas. By 1860, Texarkana had a population of 5,000 people. In 1865, Texarkana became a county seat after it was designated as such by the Arkansas General Assembly.
