Van Buren was a slaveholding town in Arkansas during the 18th century. The town is named for John Van Buren, an American politician who served as the seventh U.S. President from 1829 to 1840. The town was founded in 1798 by Abraham and Sarah Green, two of thirteen slaves from Goree Island in Stroud County, Georgia, who fled to what is now Van Buren after being caught stealing goods from their master's plantation. The Green family lived there until 1800, when they moved to Hickory Point on the Mississippi River. They were replaced by other slaves who had arrived over the course of several years following the Battle of Cowpens (1780). In 1800, John Cranch moved his family to Van Buren and began trading with Native Americans. He built a log cabin near where he currently resides on State Street and developed a small farm which he used as his home and business office until his death in 1847. In 1830, John Quincy Adams became president and approved a bill providing for gradual emancipation of slaves in Arkansas Territory; this law was later repealed by Abraham Lincoln under pressure from Southern slaveholders. Van Buren did not become an abolitionist until after the Civil War ended; however, it became one of its most vocal supporters on Capitol Hill throughout the 1870s and 1880s. Most notably, van Buren led efforts to pass legislation condemning Reconstruction (1868-1871) – an attempt by Northern lawmakers to re-establish white rule in former Confederate states following their victory at Yorktown Heights (1864). Over time, however, van Buren came to be seen as a moderate opponent of Reconstructionism itself – instead aligning himself with such luminaries as Daniel Webster and Tom Cotton against Lincoln’s more radical critics within Congressional Democratic Party factions overall. In 1865–66, vanBuren played a critical role in helping secure passage of the Thirteenth Amendment securing voting rights for African Americans nationwide – something that he would later claim was among his proudest accomplishments as president After leaving office in 1877 due to term limits set forth by Ulysses S Grant – McLean County’s first Republican governor –vanBuren returned briefly to politics before dying at age 91 at his plantation near Pine Bluff on October 9th 1888
