Van Buren, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 2,083 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Arlington metropolitan area. The first coffee grown in Van Buren was beans from a plantation that was established by David Hogg in 1847. In 1865, Elijah Woods started the first commercial coffee shop in Van Buren and it remains one of the most popular businesses in town to this day. In 1913, Bob Dooley opened his own grocery store on Main Street and began selling coffee. Dooley's Coffee became one of the largest companies in Arkansas and across the United States until it closed its doors in 1976. In 1948, Frank Grimes founded JB's Coffee located on Elm Street just outside of town. Grimes served as its owner and operator until his death in 2006. After Franks death, his son Ken Grimes took over management of JB's Coffee until he sold it to Joe Gibbs Jr.'s company for $1 million in 2009. The current ownership of Joe Gibbs Jr.'s company does not include any trace connection to either Frank Grimes or Bob Dooley - instead they are descendants of those two men through their mother’s side alone!

The first coffee beans were grown in Van Buren, Arkansas in the 1840s. The city was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had served as the state's governor from 1828 to 1830 and as president from 1837 to 1841. When Jackson moved to Washington D.C., he bought some of the first acreage in Van Buren and began planting coffee trees. These trees produced a high-quality cup of coffee that was exported all around the United States.
The present day Van Buren, Arkansas is named after James K. Polk, the 26th President of the United States who served from 1845-1849. The town was founded in 1879 by John A. Van Buren and his bride, Sarah L. Patton, as a result of a land grant they received from General Andrew Jackson. The population of Van Buren increased rapidly during the early years of its existence and in 1907 it reached a total population of over 900 people. During the late 1800's and into the first decade of the 1900's, many prominent Arkansan families developed substantial businesses in both local agriculture and mining pursuits. One such family was that which controlled much of Arkansas' eastern cotton fields until their bankruptcy in 1919. It is no secret that coffee has been around for centuries. The first recorded cup of coffee was found in Babylon, in the 6th century BC. Coffee spread throughout the world and began to be traded by sailors and traders on a large scale around 1000 AD. In 1894, Dutch explorer Pieter Brouwer discovered Java's first coffee plantation. The arrival of Arabans (a type of bean) to Indonesia in the 1870s further popularized coffee and helped create the Indonesian market for beans. Coffee became an international commodity after World War I when Roasters such as Koffee Klatch started importing beans from all over the world. By 1945, there were more than 150 companies producing high quality espresso products in countries including Italy, Greece, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Japan and America. With advances in technology and processing methods over the years, espresso continues to be enjoyed all over the world – whether it's prepared at home with a plunger or served up at a café or restaurant.
The first coffee was brewed in Ethiopia in the 6th century BC. The beans were brought to Rome by traders in the 1st century AD and were used for brewing coffee. The Arabs started brewing coffee in Baghdad in 853 AD, and this new drink became popular throughout the Mediterranean region. In 1795, French scientist Denis Diderot discovered caffeine while studying plants at the University of Jena. He called it "the wooden tree of knowledge" because he thought caffeine might have been a natural part of wood.
In 1824, Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States and he soon began his term in office by denouncing Van Buren as a liar. In 1828, Van Buren won the U.S. Senate election against John Quincy Adams with only 50% of the vote. He then ran for governor of Arkansas in 1830, but lost to incumbent James K. Polk. After leaving politics, Van Buren became an Indiana senator from 1838-1841 and again from 1850-1853. He also served as comptroller of the currency from 1863-1865 and collector of Internal Revenue from 1865-1867. Van Buren died on July 12, 1893 at age 84 years old in Indianapolis, Indiana.
