Van Buren was founded in 1836 by Andrew Jackson and named for him. The city is located in Webster County, Arkansas, about 20 miles east of Little Rock. Van Buren is the county seat of Webster County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,811. It is within the Arkadelphia–based micropolitan area which has a total population of 17,243 according to the 2010 census. Van Buren began as a small log cabin on Valentine's Day in 1836 by two fur traders, John Wilkinson and David Burnett. By 1840, it had grown to include a sawmill, grist mill andivery barns; three stores; one school; and nine homes.During Reconstruction (1865-1877), Van Buren became an important center for black Poplar Bluff Republicans who were forced out of Arkansas during the race riots following President Abraham Lincoln's reelection in November 1865. In 1871 Jackson was impeached and removed from office after being found guilty of bribery and other charges related to his time as governor of Arkansas. After his removal from office, Van Buren reverted back to its early days as a frontier town with several residences built by settlers such as Daniel Boone and James Waddell along the Arkadelphia River upstream from present day Van Buren Elementary School on what is now State Road 724A (now known as I-40). Some believe that these pioneer dwellings may have been used as barracks for Union troops during World War II whenArkansas was under military occupation pursuant to General Joseph Johnston's order No. 9(a) dated 8 October 1942 which stated "all male citizens over age 21 residing within this state must register with military authorities at once". The city limits did not change until 1907 when it added its first post office building which still stands today at 5th Street Southeast corner Main Avenue opposite Arkadelphia Middle School/High School.. In 1901 Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston moved his headquarters from Little Rock to VanBuren after losing his war against Ulysses S Grant in northeastern Arkansas near Fort Smith. During Reconstruction (1865-1877), he presided over a secret society called "The Order" which functioned primarily among white supremacists led by Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest...Forrest regularly traveled through central Arkansas into southern Webster County where he would pick off Democratic Party activists working on voter registration drives or delivering ballots while wearing civilian clothes so that they could not be identified or captured by law enforcement officials upon their return home...In 1927 Forrest was indicted on 72 counts including 24 counts of perjury due to statements made during an impeachment proceeding against then Speaker William Dudley Earle Jr.. After pleading no contest to all but 2 counts (the perjury count) he received probation and served 3 years before finally dying in Winnemucca outside Conway Springs on 10 January 1932...He remains buried at Spring Hill Cemetery outside Conway Springs.. Van Burens economy relied heavily upon timber production until around 1900 when cotton started becoming more popular due to increased demand for raw materials exported abroad throughout most of America during this period known as "the great depression." In addition some local businesses such as A&P grocery store operated until around 1940 although many business closures took place during this time including most notably J C Penney Department Store which closed completely in 1951 due largely to competition from Sears Roebuck & Co across town adjacent to Central High School . Many are also familiar with name brands such as Coca Cola products manufactured here suchas Minute Maid orange juice concentrate beginning production here in 1913 making it one of only 3 places west of Interstate 40 where Coca Colas were produced before reaching eastern markets
Founded in 1836, Van Buren was the first town in Arkansas. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the Mississippi River and its access to trade and transportation. In 1845, the legislature passed a law creating the Arkansas Territory. Van Buren became the capital of the territory.
