The origins of the National Guard are unknown, but it is believed that they were first organized as a militia unit in 1821. By 1830, the National Guard had grown significantly and was made up of various counties throughout Arkansas. In 1836, President Andrew Jackson signed legislation authorizing the creation of a national guard district within Arkansas. This led to the growth of the National Guardsman within Arkansas and across America. The first military exercises for members of the Arkansas National Guardsmen took place on November 5, 1870 at Fort Smith. These exercises were meant to train members for future conflicts with Mexico. The exercises also served as a vehicle for networking between different county militias and units under ARNG command. Throughout its history, the Arkansas National Guard has played an important role in Van Buren County by providing law enforcement services, emergency response, and more recently gaming services during special events such as 4-day summer festivals or Christmas Tree Lighting ceremonies. In recent years, Members of The Arkansas National Guard have taken on new roles including serving as officers in local law enforcement agencies or being called upon to protect service members who are deployed abroad (e.g., Operation Enduring Freedom). The Van Buren, Arkansas National Guard has been Gifts to the community since 1898.
Van Buren is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent residents in Van Buren were two families from Illinois who arrived in 1836 and 1840. A post office was established in 1847, and by 1860 it had a population of about 25 people. In 1868, the post office moved to its present location, which included the current town limits. A sawmill was built around 1870 on a stream that flows into the Arkansas River near present day Van Buren. This mill provided jobs for many people in the community until it closed down in 1984. The first school opened in Van Buren on July 22, 1872. It was a one-room school with 12 students and served as an elementary school until 1945 when it became a middle school. The high school opened on March 15, 1951 and remains operational today as both an elementary and secondary school. In 1953, local citizens voted to incorporate as a village; this decision led to the construction of what is now known as downtown Van Buren (the original name for what is now downtown Pulaski) which began construction in 1954 and finished four years later; this allowed for more housing development within city limits without having to go through county approval or violence from protesters associated with Walker County Industrial Development Corporation (WCIDC). This process also set off several other smaller villages across Pulaski County which gradually grew larger over time culminating with downtown Pulaski's incorporation intotown on November 3rd 1959 under name "Van Buren" after then Governor Orval Faubus' daughter

The National Guard was established in 1792 as a response to the American Revolution. The Guard was originally made up of volunteers from each state, and it slowly grew into a full-time force. In 1937, the Guard was reorganized into a separate branch of the Defense Department called the National Military Establishment.
Van Buren was the first U.S. president from Arkansas, serving from 1829 to 1837. He is largely remembered for his role in the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which granted slavery status to Missouri and Kansas but not to Arkansas.
Van Buren was named after Andrew Jackson, the first U.S. president and a brother of Van Buren County's namesake, John C. Van Buren. The town was founded in 1827, when the Missouri Pacific Railroad began construction through the area. The railroad allowed for an increase in population and commerce in the area and soon developed into a town with a population of around 100 people. In 1859, Van Buren became part of Arkansas Territory, which took shape following the creation of that state from parts of Texas and Kansas. The territory comprised all of Arkansas east of the Mississippi River as well as most of Oklahoma and parts of Louisiana. The early years were difficult for Van Buren because it lacked infrastructure to support its growing population; however, over time it grew into one of Arkansas' major cities with a bustling commercial district and numerous schools. In 1907, Van Buren became part of newly created Benton County after it was split off from Benton County bloodstreams west-of-the-river region (which at that time included much more land than is now within Benton County). By this time, the city had grown to over 200 people and had become home to many businesses such as banks, factories, churches and other public buildings as well as some residences. The growth continued until World War II when many residents moved away due to wartime shortages in housing stock; however, some returned during peace times before leaving again during war times when prices increased markedly due to munitions production nearby. Van Buren has seen various incarnations since its founding including being called Battle Creek (1827-1830), Westport (1830-1832), Fayetteville (1832-1836), Little Rock (1906-1910), Rogers City (1920s) and finally Conway (1960s). It currently serves as an unincorporated community located within Benton County approximately 2 miles southwest thereof on State Highway 158/US Highway 362; though it does have its own post office which opened in 1907 under the name Battle Creek Post Office #1 & #2
