In 1907, the name was changed to Alma Post Office because Alma (a creek) run through it. The current name comes from the community's location at an elevation of 4272 feet (1342 meters). In 1906–1907, the San Bernardino Mountains were fire-bombed by urged Mexican president Porfirio Díaz who wanted to demonstrate American support for Mexico during its revolt against Spanish rule. One bomber killed three people and injured twenty-six others before being apprehended by U.S. Marines under Admiral Dewey; he was tried and found guilty but commuted to life imprisonment due to public opinion in America favoring leniency towards Mexicans during that time frame despite Spain having signed a peace treaty with Mexico months earlier
Adelanto was founded on December 12, 1885 by George Adelson and his wife Anna. The town was named after the Adelson family's farm in Russia. The land that would become Adelanto was first bought from the Shasta River Indian Reservation by John C. Fremont in 1864. In 1886, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors voted to donate adelanto land to the Town of Adelanto for development as a planned community. By 1888, ads had been placed throughout California seeking people to come live in what would eventually be called "the new Valley". On January 1, 1889, the first post office opened in Adelanto with Arthur Hirsch as Postmaster-General. On July 1, 1889, the name of the town changed to its present day form - Adelanto. The original adelsons donated many acres of their land to make up for any initial population growth that may not have occurred due to lack of available land or other reasons. Many businesses and residences were built during this time including: A & W Brewery (1893), Mrs Dooley's School (1901), Pemberton Oil Refinery (1909), First National Bank (1920), and more recently Appleby Place Apartments and Villa Park Shopping Center which is now part of ADP Financial Corporation..
