Adelanto is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It is the county seat of San Bernardino and the largest city in the county. The population was 238,337 at the 2010 census. As of 2017, it has a population of 379,723. The City of Adelanto was founded on November 15, 1887 by investors from Fontana and Riverside counties as an agricultural town to serve the growing citrus industry in what is now downtown San Bernardino. The first two mayors were George Wetherspoon and Lafayette Smith. In 1923, when part of Riverside County became independent as a separate political entity, Adelanto became its own municipality with a mayor-council form of government under then-mayor J.D. A Brief History of Adelanto, California Adelanto is a small town located in Mono County, California. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Easton-Manteca-wadsworth Junction metropolitan area. The town began as a mining community in 1884 and quickly grew due to its mineral wealth. By 1930, Adelanto had over 2,000 residents and boasted a large public works yard and two coal mines. However, during World War II the town was consumed by military activity and largely destroyed by bombing raids from the Japanese Empire. Today Only vestiges of mining buildings remain including an active powder magazine and a small mill that still produces flour for local markets. Despite its humble beginnings, Adelanto has since become one of California's most popular tourist destinations for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, swimming and hunting; as well as its rich history which can be experienced through educational events such as historical tours or old-time music festivals.
