The battalion had been activated as part of Operation Neptune's Spear and was then sent to Adelanto Heights where they were billeted until relieved by 2nd Battalion (2/5) Marines from Riverside County on February 17th, 1969. There followed a number of deployments over the next several years as units and detachments changed hands or were reassigned within the Marine Corps or Air Force. In 1992, 1st Brigade Combat Team (1/10) Infantrymen from Stockton arrived in town and assumed command of 1st Battalion (1/24), which had been mobilized just prior to Desert Storm. By 1998, there had been 12 deployments by both services with more than 6,000 Marines serving in Southern California since World War II ended; this included two tours of duty in Kosovo that year as well as an increase in deployments through 2001 due to 9/11 attacks). However, it would be another decade before there was another significant deployment taking place within the community; this time it would be for Operation Iraqi Freedom where units from various agencies descended upon town on August 20th 2003 for what became known as "Adelanto Days". It is located on the border of Riverside and Orange counties, about 20 miles (30 km) east of downtown Los Angeles. The name Adelanto comes from Spanish for "place where adays can be caught" because there are manyadels or almshouses in the area. In 1887, Wm Dixon donated land to build a school in what is now Adelanto. The first class of students moved into their new building on October 1st, 1888. In 1925, Pritchett Middle School was built adjacent to the old Dixon School site and still serves as one of the town's two high schools today. In 1951, when Riverside County established its own school system, Adelanto High School became part of that system; it remains an all-girls school today. On April 14th 1984 California Governor Ronald Reagan issued Executive Order 9362 which created a Community Development Block Grant program within state government called CDBG-I (Community Development Block Grant - Infrastructure). This program would provide financial assistance to local governments and organizations who were initiating or expanding programs that address social justice issues such as criminal justice reform, poverty reduction, environmental sustainability and women's empowerment through community development block grant awards

Adelanto is a small city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 7,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the border of Riverside and San Bernardino counties, about 15 miles (25 km) south of downtown Los Angeles and 20 miles (30 km) east of Pomona. The name Adelanto comes from two Spanish words: "adelante" meaning "ahead" and "lontano" meaning "far away". A post office called Adelanto was established in 1881, but no town developed until 1903 when William Hutton erected a log cabin on land now occupied by the city's second square. In 1907, Hutton donated additional land to make an urban district; the present day city limits were laid out in 1909. In 1912, citrus fruits began being grown here in what became known as Orange County; it was not until 1922 that grapes were also planted here for wine production. The first commercial winery opened in 1923 with Juglar Winery; many other estates followed over time. By 1945, orange juice had become one of California's most important industries and Adelanto became known as the Citrus Capital of America.By that time, however, Pershing Square had been renamed Getty Center after then-Secretary of War Edwin Murchison Jr., who purchased it for $2 million in 1948. The new headquarters for United States Marine Corps General Headquarters were built there during World War II and later used as a movie set for Douglas Fairbanks' silent film Old Glory (1927). During much of its history Adelanto has been home to several colleges including USC University which moved into its new location adjacent to Pershing Square in 1966; Caltech which opened its new campus nearby in 1965; SRI International which moved into Building 1 at 4255 Gilmore Rd., across from City Hall on Aprill 1941 - becoming Southern Research Institute (); Scripps Institution Of Oceanography located on Yorba Linda Street between First Street and Redondo Boulevard starting with their third building there starting around 1921 - all these institutions have since left or merged with others or have relocated within Riverside County proper
