Captain Sutter had a weakness for fine weapons and armor, so he ordered his men to build him an artillery piece from scratch. The cannons were actually made by three craftsmen: a blacksmith named George Stephenson; a tailor named David Starr Livingston; and a carpenter named Nicholas Applegate. The fortification was completed on February 3, 1849. It was called "Sutter's Fort" because Captain Sutter himself was responsible for its construction. The fort served as headquarters of the Californios during their fight against Mexico City until it finally fell to Mexican forces in 1862. After that point, it became part of the United States Army until it was leased to the local community in 1916 and then sold to Adelanto Corporation in 1928. At that time, it became known as "Fort McClure." Today, "Fort McClure" is open to visitors every day from 9am to 4pm except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day when it is closed due to military obligations outside of town.
