Agoura Hills, California is a small town in the San Bernardino County of Southern California. The population was 23,028 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Agoura Hills" comes from the Agoura Hills district of Los Angeles and is thought to come from Anglo-Spanish words meaning "aguardiente" or 'watchtower'. The first permanent settlers in what is now Agoura Hills were two families who arrived on horseback in 1847. They named their new community after their home country: Argentina (now Uruguay). After a few decades, other families followed suit and soon there were ten homesteads established in what would become Agoura Hills. The early years of Agoura Hills were difficult due to lack of water and grazing opportunities. However, through hard work and determination, the community flourished over time. By 1860, they had developed an irrigation system that allowed them to produce crops such as grapes and cotton without penalty for not having enough water. In 1892, Harry Chandler bought 5 square miles (12 km2) adjacent to present day Agoura Hills from Thomas Edison along with five other parcels for $5 per acre ($/ha). Here he began developing huge tracts of land into agroforestry plantations which became some of the largest ever undertaken in California at that time. This led to increased competition for resources from nearby citrus growers and made it difficult for Chandler to maintain his monopoly on production until his death in 1934. During World War II much activity took place within theament near downtown LA; many people worked at local plants producing munitions or Military supplies like gasoline tanks and ammunition boxes etc... One can see evidence still remaining today of these operations located at 7385 West Pico Boulevard - now known as Boca Raton Barracks
