Mexican President Vicente Guerrero was so impressed by General Custer's cavalry that he offered him a military position in Mexico if he would lead an army into California to fight against US Commodore John D. Stockton's forces. On July 26 of that year, General Custer accepted the offer and rode into Mexico City accompanied by his adjutant general, James Halleck; other officers including Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Parker; First Lieutenant John Chilton; Second Lieutenant Augustus Kelley; Sergeant James Welles; Corporal Samuel Gridley Lowell; Private Enoch Pratt; and drummer corporal Daniel Webster. The city was founded by Mexicans in 1871 as Rancho Agoura Hills. The name was changed to Agoura Hills in 1903 when it became a part of the City of Ventura. In 1912, the city annexed parts of neighboring Simi Valley and formed the new town of Val Verde. In 1938, Agoura Hills became an independent city after annexing part of neighbouring Thousand Oaks. In 1951, Agoura Hills established itself as a commercial center with its first shopping center opened that year on Westgarth Avenue near Ventura Boulevard. By 1964, there were over 40 stores in the area and downtown had become one of Southern California's most vibrant sections with nightlife and other attractions drawing people from throughout Southern California. In 1984, following passage through Congress of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution Amendments granting voting rights to all citizens regardless of race or color, Yorba Linda Mayor Harry Terris made plans for an ''inaugural parade'' celebrating black residents' entrance into white society in downtown Agoura hills which would have included floats carrying African American college graduates who had relocated to Hollywood during World War II pursuant to Executive Order 9066 - thus fulfilling promises made by then-Mayor Terris as part of his ` integration policy'. However due to community opposition this event never took place and today only rumor has it that some small group within City Hall may still be planning such an event although no formal announcement has been made public about future plans since then
Agoura Hills was founded in 1873 by Charles Goodyear and his wife Lillie. The Goodyear family ran a general store called the "Goodyears" on Agoura Boulevard for over seventy years. In 1916, the Goodyear family sold their business to John Hargrave and his brothers. The Hargravses operated it until they sold it in 1959 to the Ralston family. The Ralston family ran it as a grocery store until 1986 when it was purchased by Safeway.
