In 1892, Agoura Hills was incorporated as a city with a population of only 20 residents. By 1915 it had grown to 100 citizens and by 1920 it had reached its current size of 23,898 people. The city developed rapidly due to its location between Los Angeles and Ventura counties (then part of Mexico) and its easy access to transportation including both roads and railroads which made it an important economic center during much of this time period. One major development that helpedAgoura Hills become one of Southern California’s most prosperous communities was the construction during this time period of several large hospitals – Orange Coast Hospital (now known as USC Medical Center), Santa Anita Park Hospital and finally Hollywoodland Hospital – all located within minutes’ walk or drive of each other on Ventura Boulevard in downtown Agoura Hills.
