Agoura Hills, California is a city located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It was incorporated on February 14, 1911. The population was 102,521 as of the 2010 census. Agoura Hills is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "Agoura" comes from an old Spanish word meaning "the waves", and refers to the height of land near where it stands today: about 4,000 feet (1,200 m). In 1881 real estate developer Samuel Sennett purchased a parcel of what is now Agoura Hills for $2 million and named it after his home state of Illinois. The original town site that grew up around Sennett's purchase included only a few small houses and some grazing land. However, within two years he had built more than 100 homes and attracted large numbers of people with his promise of easy access to top-notch schools and businesses. By 1907 Sennett had developed what are now Agoura Hills into one of Southern California's most important subdivisions – bounded by Burbank to the north and east; Beaumont Heights to the south; Canoga Park to the west; Westwood Village to the northwest; Sherman Oaks to the northeast; and North Hollywood to the southeast. The first store in Agoura Hills opened its doors in 1909 at 6th Street & Western Avenue. Agoura Hills, California is a small town in Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the western edge of Ventura County and has a population of about 60,000 people. The name "Agoura Hills" was given to the area by J.P. Morgan in 1892 after he saw an annual grove of trees standing at what is now the intersection of Agoura Boulevard and North Street. The name was also used for other nearby towns such as Westport and Encino before it became known as Agoura Hills. The first humans to live in this part of Los Angeles County were Native American tribe members who hunted game hereabouts from early times until around 1800 AD when gold started being found in this region.
