Agoura Hills is a town in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 67,153 at the 2010 census. It is part of the West Covina–Montebello area. The name Agoura Hills comes from the agoura tree, which grows plentifully in this region and provides lumber for buildings and other items. The first settler in what became Agoura Hills was George Winton, who arrived in 1847. In 1881, General James Hutton established Camp Sherman on the site of present-day Hollywood Boulevard and named it after himself. By 1907, most of Hollywood had moved to nearby Van Nuys; however, a small community of Anglo Americans remained in Agoura Hills until 1949 when they were replaced by Mexican aliens. As Hollywood grew increasingly glamorous during the 1920s and 1930s, many movie stars took up residence in The Palms - including Mae West (in 1933), Claudette Colbert (in 1939), Rita Hayworth (1940), Petula Clark (1941), Lucille Ball (1945) and Shirley Temple (1946). Agoura Hills is a small city located in the Simi Valley region of Ventura County, California. The earliest reference to Agoura Hills comes from Mexican sources who noted that there were trees growing near Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and that some cattle were being driven across the hills. By 1800, there were several farms and small businesses located in what is now Agoura Hills. Notable residents at this time include Antonio Lopez (1801-1869), Manuel Nieto (baptized September 8, 1795 – after his death as Pedro Nunez Mota), José María Dominguez (1798-1868), Francisco Palomares de la Hoz (died 1840) and José María Balboa y Costilla (1797-1868). In 1875, when Ventura County was created from parts of Santa Barbara County,Agoura Hills became part of it as well. That year saw the opening of Los Angeles Times building on Wilshire Boulevard just east of present day Fair Oaks Boulevard. At its peak population size, Agoura Hills had over 60 businesses employing 590 residents. Today, much smaller portions of downtown have retained their original architecture while other areas have undergone changes including gentrification which has led to increased properties values within walking distance or close by for many people in the community.
