Agoura Hills is a census-designated place (CDP) in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. The community was founded in 1892 as Agoura Park and later Agoura Hills. The name "Agoura" comes from the Anglo-Spanish word "aguaza", meaning woodchuck or sumac. In 1888, Don Isidro de la Torre organized a group of farmers to sell citrus fruit from their trees on Menard Avenue and Agoura Boulevard east of Ventura Boulevard. By 1890, there were over seventy growers in the area producing oranges, apples, and other fruits. In 1903, the first post office was established in Agoura Hills with Wm Hesseltine as the first clerk. In 1916, it became an incorporated city with a population of 10,000 people under Mayor George Sussman; however it again lost its municipal status in 1948 when it reverted back to Ventura County after being reincorporated as part of El Cajon town center movement which sought to consolidate all villages within Ventura County into one municipality without village meetings or vote taking place. During World War II much development took place around Camp Pendleton which included new housing developments such as Government House and Naval Air Station Palomar; this led to increased population density around Camp Pendleton that affected Agoura Hills through increased traffic noise and limited access to open space for residents living near Camp Pendleton's boundaries In 1957 voters approved Measure V which would have annexed parts of unincorporated Village of Westlake into City Limits; however this annexation did not take place because Westlake City Limits had already been merged into downtown Los Angeles by then Agoura Hills achieved city status again on March 15th 1969 when Mayor Ronnie Farrell announced plans for a new shopping mall adjacent to Interstate 405 called Valley Center Shopping Center which would become home to both Sears & Kmart stores while JCPenney would open a store inside what is now Staplescenter across from Safeway . However this project never came to fruition due to financial difficulties
