Agoura Hills is a city in Los Angeles County, California on the eastern side of the San Fernando Valley. The population was 113,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the West Hollywood–Santa Monica-Malibu metropolitan area. The Agoura Hills area was first inhabited by Native Americans including Mono and Tongva people in pre-Spanish era. European exploration began with Captain John Cone's 1819 voyage over what is now Southern California when he noted Mount Diablo and named it after General Santa Anita (now Mountain View). In 1847, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded by Franciscan missionaries under the leadership of José Joaquín de Alcalá y Pavón, with land grants from King Carlos IV of Spain. In 1871, following the completion of Union Pacific Railroad's main line from Sacramento to LA, settlers began flowing into what would become Agoura Hills. By 1900, there were more than 100 families living in Agoura Hills. The city's name originated with an agreement made between various local groups during a town meeting on November 1, 1899: "Agoura Hill shall be called Anaheim" because it was desired that all property within an 8-mile radius should fall within one deed for development as a single town site; however due to objections from other towns near Anaheim (Inglewood and Santa Ana) which had also reached agreements for similar names), "Agoura Hills" prevailed over "Anaheim". The City Council meetings are open to the public and are held at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays where citizens can voice their concerns about city issues or review ordinances currently under consideration by City Council members or Committee Members - usually during business hours outside of council meetings which take place at 5 p.m.. Agoura Hills was founded in 1878 by George and Mary Agoura. The original homestead, now known as the George Agoura House, is on the corner of Sepulveda Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard. The town grew quickly because of its location near Brentwood, Simi Valley and Malibu. In 1912, the first high school was built in Agoura Hills. In 1958, a community center was built in Agoura Hills to serve the town's growing population.
